7mm PRC

Model 457

Elite
I've really been wanting to buy a bolt action rifle. Every time I start doing some online comparison shopping, I end up down a very deep rabbit hole and give up out of frustration. I want something for 500 to 600 yard shots. I am almost set on the 7mm PRC round. Any suggestions as to why, or why not this should be my final decision?

well, not being a 28cal fan i'd say it's a good enough cartridge. most any cartridge will do if 600 is your limit. what game (if that's the intended use) are you shooting or is this for range time? if you don't reload, then the 7prc should give you off the shelf options that the 7saum doesn't. if you reload just make sure you can get dies, brass and large rifle primers BEFORE you decide on the cartridge. have you decided on which firearm brand yet? also, the 7rm will give you nearly the same velocities with lower priced ammo.

This is for target shooting. I've always been partial to the Remington 700 BDL line but I don't see the 7mm PRC as an available caliber. So I'm thinking the Weatherby 307, Springfield Armory 2020, or maybe the Browning X-Bolt.

the 307 seems to be a good action from what others have posted and used for builders. the 307 actions are for sale in action Only's. i believe savage offer the 7prc in a 110 which is a wonderful action.

5-600?

Just go .308. More than capable, and a lot more affordable ammo, at least around here…and online. I recently saw some Federal Gold Match 168SMK going for $1.50/rd (AIM, maybe? CDNN?).

A lot more reloading bullet options, as well.
That would again make the Remington 700 BDL an available choice then. Damnitt! Back down the rabbit hole!

Stay away from new Rem 700s.

The .284s are fabulous and easy to reload accurately. Heavy, high bc bullets are your friend. Juat make sure your chosen rifle comes with a fast twist for caliber barrel.
9 works with nearly all 28cals. 8 is the easy button and only on/with mono's you'll need 7.5 or faster. 197smk requires a 7.5 as Berger 195eol's needs a 9 minimum. I'm using a 10 in the 7-08 with up to 150's. The saum has an 8 for extra safety for enough twist as i couldn't get anything faster for the 3 places i use to get ar barrels made. The worst thing about factory guns as they're made on old school twist rates makes the heaviest bullets per caliber unusable.
