Anni get on this would you?

While Anni is working on that question here’s another one keeps me awake at night: What was Uncle Ben’s rice before it was converted?

so this was invented to replace it...................worcestershire
Worcestershire and Leicestershire were invented so that when the Empire inevitably went belly up - as they all do - the British could still enjoy their sense of smug superiority when they heard American tourists loudly mangling those names on the Underground. That’s why they made Leicester Square (pronounced Lester Square for the curious) a major tourist destination.

Bonus tidbit: the English typically shorten Worcestershire (pronounced woostershear - the shire is where Hobbits live) Sauce to Worcester Sauce.

And the town of Chiswick to the west of London is pronounced Chisick, but sandwich is still sandwich. Go figure.
