anyone take brass to the scrap yards yet..??

I seem to remember my wife taking a 2 gallon ice cream tub full of brass to a scrap yard several years ago.

I think she got 40 bucks for it.

After time I seem to remember Blazer Brass selling for $11.95 a box.

So she ended up getting three boxes of Blazer for 2 gallons of used brass.

My grandson-in-law is an idiot. He doesn't ever pick up brass. I could probably go down to the shooting range at the back of the property and get a 5 gallon bucket. I might ask my wife today if brass is worth anything and if I should do that.
brass from ammo is still worth something....the scrap yard owner told me some years ago, that ammo brass (back then) is priced under plumbing brass like about .25¢ per pound less.....so not as much value as pluming brass, but still takes in some cash.

as i said earlier, i just toss in the brass into a 5 gallon pail, all brass sweepings from the range, and even .22LR brass, small as it is, it all adds up....just do not be in a hurry to run to the scrap yard with only a pound of it.

so i let the bucket sit under a work bench, and it might take a year to fill up for someone like me.

the too, many times i will decap my brass, especially the 9mm, then clean it, and toss the primers into a 2 pound coffee can...i easily garnered an extra 4 pounds in just primers, some of that too, is from some brass that i toss out that i do not need.

it all adds up.

today was 62.00 worth of money for maybe a brick of primers (or 2) when they go on sale.

Naive question:

Who reloads center-fire brass ?
if you mean the USED brass sweepings from range floors, from THAT company named...."Center-Fire Brass".....

then not me....

i try not to buy used brass, i went and bought all new brass, 45 ACP from, Starline Brass, that i haven't even reloaded 200 pieces out of the 1,000 that i bought.

but, at the very least, if one cannot get to sweep up his own brass from a range or club, then Center-Fire Brass, is one of a few "used brass companies", to buy from.

No. THAT was a STUPID question, not naive.

My NAIVE question was supposed to be asking about RIM-fire. Everybody I know that reloads reloads center-fire. I don't actually know if anybody I know reloads rim-fire, but I know a couple of guys who definitely don't.

I use this big net to catch brass and on a stand when standing and on AR's i use a brass goat.

that was indeed my second thought...anyone i know, reloads center-fire only.....

but frankly, i did not know exactly what you meant....so i went with the company.....Center-Fire Brass, for used brass sales.

and no, not me (reload rimfire) ...rimfire is rather cheap to buy new......

but i have seen a video or 2 of those that do.

and if so, what is/was the going rate for brass ..????

this is what i just googled.....but it is also "AI google"....so not that dependable

  • Average Price: National average for brass shells is approximately $2.50/lb.
  • Rhode Island/Regional Rates: Regional, clean, yellow brass scrap (which includes ammo casings) is reported in the $2.67 to $2.85/lb range.
do they make you de prime them first?
our recycle place will only buy shells if primers are removed
i sold a BUNCH years ago when i was rangemaster at our old range, once a week picking up brass
spend a day with a helper popping out the primers
sort of SUCKED, but money went back into the club

no, some of those were from when i was reloading on the Dillon...and some (9mm) were from decapping on that useless Lee i have, just to make use of a useless press. ...and from there, they go into a coffee can, awaiting the REAL press, the Dillon for reloading, at a later time.

otherwise, they take the spent casings either way.

that place you went to might be that spent primers are dirty, and they really don't want that all over the place..???

spent primers mucked up my useless Lee press, several times.

About 3 years ago I went in the PX at Ft. Wood and talked to the guy in the gun department, I asked him if there was something you could attach to an auto that would catch the brass......he just looked at me, then said he hadn't seen anything like that. I told him I thought it could be something like a small fish net used to catch gold fish in an aquarium, just bent a wire support to fit on the weapon. He said he'd never heard of anything such thing and told me I should patent that, I told it was too much trouble. Then he asked if I would object if he made such a device if I didn't want to and I told him to go right ahead.

Sometimes I regret things I do and don't do, like putting coffee in tea bags to make instant hot coffee.....but, oh well......
