Today marks the 31st anniversary of the Oklahoma City Bombing.
I was invomved with the execution of the Suspect at the end of his time and little known fact McViegh was only convicted of 8 counts of murder. The Government was concerned as the mid 1990’s you had a rise in popularity with Militia and Sovereign Citizen movement so they only charged him with 8 counts for the Federal Officers killed in the event they got a full acquittal they had 160 other counts they could file in Federal court and not be double jeopardy .
He was executed at USP Terre Haute Indiana June 11th 2001. It was called Operatoon Elm tree because there was an Elm Tree in the Federal Building grounds that survived referred to as the Survivors tree. There was an Elm seedling from that tree planted at the Death House at USP Terre Haute and while small was growing and pointed out when the bomber was moved to have his sentence carried out.
