Armed and Armored: Jeeps with Teeth

Since the 37mm on the jeep didn't fare too well, the TD Board still wanted a mobile AT gun and this is how the M8 armored car got its start. Being outclassed very quickly, it transitioned to the recon role where it performed well if the terrain was not too rugged.
 
I love this story. I was smiling at all the pictures showing "real time" upgrades and the backyard mechanic ingenuity of forward troops. The "one-of-a-kind custom" armor plates at the front are totally GI-I (GI Ingenuity).
 
In South Vietnam, the stalwarts saw some success keeping "Chuck and the boys" from totally controlling Highway QL 13, otherwise known as "Thunder Road."
