At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ends.
At 5 a.m. that morning, Germany, bereft of manpower and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiégne, France.
The First World War left nine million soldiers dead and 21 million wounded, with Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, France and Great Britain each losing nearly a million or more lives.
In addition, at least five million civilians died from disease, starvation or exposure.

Never new this fact from the article:

“More soldiers died on the last day of WWI than on D-Day. Find out why Allied leaders found outrageous excuses to send 13,000 men to their deaths against a defeated enemy”

Same way now with Russia and Ukraine. Russia will prevail on sheer attrition
Always been that way. In our own country Grant figured out he could lose 2 or three for every Confederate and eventually win because the South would run out of troops. They then stopped the “prisoner exchanges”, dooming thousands of both Union and Confederate soldiers to miserable lives and many many deaths in prison camps. Everybody know about Andersonville, but few are aware that the % of deaths there was less than with Camp Douglas (Chicago) or Elmira😏. In every case the winner writes the “history”.

Historian Joseph Persico estimated the total dead, wounded and missing on all sides on the final day was 10,900.

What a waste. It’s terrible when anyone is killed in war, even when there’s a good reason to be fighting. When there is no reason, as in this case, it’s even worse.
