It happened 80 years ago today.

Hill 115 was one of the keys to Gen. Mitsuru Ushijima’s 32nd Army’s final defenses on Okinawa, with the boys of the 32nd Infantry clearing out the Japanese 44th Brigade’s HQ there shortly after the image below was snapped.

I recently signed up for MAX and was able to binge watch The Pacific mini series again. Spielberg and Hanks crafted a great depiction of what our heroes did and endured on those islands.

As a kid a neigbbor who was a Marine Sgt who made multiple landings with his Thompson was a hero to me. I only wish I had been wise enough to spend more time talking to him about his experiences. So many are gone now, there are very few firsthand accounts to be had any more.

Yep. Right up there with Band of Brothers, some of the best television of my lifetime.
