ATF has backed away from some of its older restrictions on suppressor repair. Under a new three-page open letter, a registered, complete suppressor may be repaired or changed to another caliber without becoming a newly made National Firearms Act firearm.

There are limits. The serialized frame or receiver cannot be destroyed, the required markings have to remain intact, and the work cannot produce a new firearm. The letter is dated August 28 and appeared on ATF's Firearms page September 8.

My neighbor's grandson owns a few suppressors partly due to his college buddy's family having a company that makes and sells them. He told me that before long we should be able to just walk into a store and buy them without all the paperwork. I told him I was waiting until you could pick them up at yard sales.
