Ayoob: How to Discreetly Carry Larger Handguns

View attachment 110038

IIRC, Bianchi was wearing 17 or something like that in the photo. This dates back to 1980, and many of his designs have been copied or improved upon.

Take your pick, but I'm sure you can get something that will hide the gun.

I like that photo .

But my cynical side says that he can * stand * with that many guns , but it's a differnt thing to * walk * with them all . ( If nothing else , half of them would be constantly clanging into each other .)

If one is conceal carrying for the purpose of defense and can only use the weapon within pretty close quarters (like 7 yards approximately) how accurate do u need the gun to be? Isn’t it pretty hard to miss at such a close range? Why would u need a larger gun (if you’re carrying it for accuracy sake) and why would you need a red dot for such close proximity to a threat? I think you will have A LOT of answering to do if you use your weapon at a distance greater than 7-10 yards

A Shoulder Holster takes care of a lot of the issues. I like horizontal carry for up to a 5" 1911 or Beretta M9. With a Miami Classic style rig, the double mag pouch on the off side provides some balance

I think you arent seeing the new world of self defense. Accuracy as in Shot Placement IS important. Ask yourself how accurate you want someone to be at the next Church or shopping center Active Shooter incident. If you cant reliably make A Zone hits past 15 yards maybe you shouldnt even draw your weapon

I get that at close range, a hit is a hit; but I want to be able to make eyeball hits inside of say 5 yards and head shots at 15 yards. Its too easy to cobble together armor from the Depot stores and its cheap enough on eBay, let alone of friends who like to strap on bombs.

Not all self defense shootings are in telephone booths. The old 7 yard encounter is as ancient as Davey Crocket... Yes there are still bad breath range assaults; but there are more longer range incidents. Can you make kill shots from one end of a super market aisle to the other with you 2 inch 38 or 380 in your pocket? If you can see the threat you might want to be able to engage the threat with friendlies screaming and jumping around

The head is the new center mass

The odds of a bad breath encpunter or 7 yrds is far far greater than a school shooting, church or super market. Personal crime happens daily, 365 days a year. They are not random acts like a church, school or gathering. Just look at this weeks headline of the family carjacker.

One should be comfortable with distance shots, but accuracy 10 yards and under will be 95% of crime in America

Well yes; you are nit wrong; but Id suggest that the 7 yards and under encounters can be mitigated (NOT eliminated) by situational awareness (head on a swivel, not in your phone), as in dont let the to get close. You can only avoid church/mall/club shootings by not being there.

Back in the late 1960’s Detroit Police issued a 5” bbl S&W or Colt 38cal. On duty you could purchase and carry any caliber you want but not less than a 38. And it had to e a S&W or Colt revolver. My off duty holster was a wide rubber band on the grips of a Model 19 2 1/2” bbl. Kids needed shoes and my wife said they can’t wear holsters to school. Still carry the same way today.

Hello all, here is today's article posted on TheArmoryLife.com. It is titled “Ayoob: How to Discreetly Carry Larger Handguns” and can be found at https://www.thearmorylife.com/how-to-conceal-carry-full-size-pistols-massad-ayoob/.

When I was young, I carried a colt 1911. Big, but I thought it was ok. When I was a deputy Sheriff, I carried a model 19 with a colt Mustang as backup. Down thru the years I’ve tried everything including a model 58 41 magnum. As the years passed, I gradually reduced caliber. Now at 78 I carry either a Smith Shield; a Smith 638, or my trusty Mustang as edc.
After all these years I find that I can hit almost anything with “Baby” my Mustang, anytime I want, and so, I carry it the most.

Your still a youngster but old enough to make your choice fit your needs.👍

You most likely never know the attacker. The person who stands in line with you at the grocery store or the person close in on a daily task.
Marcus got taken out by a friendly and he was one of the best. Head on a swivel gets you so far. You cant avoid it all. You say you can, but you cant.

Statistically you are far more likely to experience conflict at 3 yards of less. However, I want the options of precision and reach. Try this drill: from the low ready at 3 yards, with the timer set at 1 second, shoot head shots. Then move back to 5 and 7 yards and repeat. We call it the hostage rescue drill. As you move back, increase time if you are missing. Misses, or hitting the hostage is a failure. I have confidence in 100% hits with my 1911's, but not so much with a 2" Airweight. Accuracy is king speed, power, and accuracy wins the fight

Well at least hopefully not???

Statistically
Ahhh statistics. Ive never been willing to bet my life on statistics, especially when I have no way to judge the data collection or the ones collecting it. Is a neighborhood where burglaries doubled in a year worse than one than where burglaries went gown? True story the first neighborhood went from ONE to TWO burglaries and the second went from 25 to 23; buy statistically the first neighborhood looks worse--thats the way cop bosses play the numbers game.
Accuracy is king speed, power, and accuracy wins the fight
YES this!

Bet your life on a bad breath encounter if you like but I will continue to train for shots well beyond and to make head shots

Why not train for both and many more 🤔🙄🙄

Forgot.. you did for the state dept and seals

Thankfully I live and travel to more sedate places. The last knowledge I had my local PD does not train to that standard except for a few select officers. Requals at the range stop at 15 yards. Self Defense for me is rounds on target quickly and accurately (I think torso) in 3 seconds. Target / Competition shooting to me is the smallest group in the alloted time at specified distance. The reality for those who have never experienced live fire just put as many rounds on the target as possible. Know who you are and stay in your lane. Highly skilled people go for the head shot, most people nah
