Ayoob: Is Open-Carry Irresponsible (or the Right Move)?

Gotta get another expert opinion on the matter

Totally do not agree with intentional open carry in public. The thought of a frisky police officer seeing it accidently being exposed being construed into open carry argument, needs addressing prior to an incident through the writing of the law. I see it as a potentially RARE moment of the above, from a complaint from a whiney 2A opposer. But it can happen.

Having had life threatening incidents of the attempted gun grab, on more than one occasion because it was right there, it is young man's fight. Oh, I was in full uniform at the time when this occurred and you want citizens brandishing around a half crazed early release criminals? From the local "normal" environment, that "fruitcake" in Wal-Mart will and have lost control of their firearm and gotten shot with it!

I love a Westerns, but let's make an attempt not to scare the old ladies and Dimocrat Karen's looking for their next cause. The lamestream media has proven where they lie on this subject, with refusing to cover the up to 2,000,000 stopped crimes by armed citizens today. Remember the shootout at the OK Corral was over not checking your open carry weapons in...

The point is there are people that will abuse this, those incidents will always be a weak flank for the anti-gunners as "you can, but should you." The same people that write articles about not letting the baddie know you are armed will state this is a right. It is, but... Just because you can buy an airplane doesn't mean you can fly it.

Conceal carry with a commonsense approach of a citizen has a right to bear arms, but in a manner of responsibility as when not in uniform assigned as a detective (most of my career), I concealed within reason and with a lot less drama... Just the occasional "Why do you need such a big gun?" Wearing a loose shirt/jacket over an outside the belt holster can be enough. As there is no advertising, a quick flash or ease of drawing to let a potential bad guy you know should be enough. It is done over a million times a year already...

Open carry is legal here and I do see it from time to time. But it is rare enough that it draws undue attention. I prefer to not draw attention.
As a friend of mine once said "The bad guy shouldn't realize that you're armed until the second bullet hits him in the chest."
 
Because you “can” do something does not necessarily mean you “should”. IMHO advertising that you are “armed” is simply an invitation for attention and problems you don’t need. You do you, but me? I carry all day, everyday, have for years and the total number of people who know it can be counted on my fingers and have fingers left over.

This old L.E. retiree has always even in the working days carried concealed when not in a blue suit. Many but not all of the people I help put in prison will get out someday. Who knows whether I might run across them somewhere.

If I ever encounter a situation needing judicious action, I don't want anyone to know who I am until I am ready.

Our agency had a situation many decades ago where a LE officer was killed after an offender took another officer's revolver. That was before handgun retention was even considered.

When I see someone in the grocery store openly carrying, I view them with a bit of caution and novelty as I don't know the person's frame of mind, if they might have an ulterior motive, if they're trying to impress or bully others, or whether they are innocently carrying openly. It is just something I make a mental note of.
 
Strap in folks, I’m adding another opinion to this subject… 😅

This subject honestly is specific to the person and the environment. Here in Arizona, open carry is pretty common. I personally want that retention strap over the top because I’m a bit older and I don’t want somebody faster than me grabbing it. I just simply feel more confident having that deterrent. “Should you open carry“ isn’t really even a question in Arizona so your environment also dictates it. Spent years in New York City, I certainly wouldn’t do it there!
 
Speaking as a retired deputy, unless I happened to fall into the middle of an in progress crime, I can't imagine why I would want anyone to know I was armed. And as a RETIRED deputy, my 1911 would only come out if someone's life was in danger. Other than that, I am a citizen witness, nothing more.
