During my long back-country hike last week I carried my Super Shockwave 12 ga. with slugs & OO Buck due to the short-ranges I would encounter, which ranged from bad-breath to ~20 yds.

When an encounter will likely be intimate and fast; it’ll be in-your-face-type action. Secondly, with you likely making a less-than-ideal shot due to duress, the bullet must offset your shortcoming. Your goal isn’t to scare or wound the creature, it’s to stop it—dead. Simply stated, the great predators require big bullets pushed fast.

If i did backcountry stuff or a lot of camping i think i’d go with an M&P10.

spent a lot of time out in the willy wags and carried a single six. came in handy a time or two, never felt under gunned.

One or both of these for simple camping scenarios.

Marlin 1894 Trapper 10+1, 10mm. Kimber Stainless II again in 10mm. Easy to store the extra rounds in 1911 magazines.

I have a Tac-14 with a brace that I like to carry for woodland social encounters

Thanks for the info. In retirement the wife and I plan on doing a fair amount of traveling out West in the Fifth Wheel and take advantage of the Parks. Practical and useful information. We won't (intentionally)be on your type trails but like being prepared.
