New here and looking for opinions/knowledge of affordable hunting scopes for Saint Victor .308. Top end would be spending $500. Will be used for Whitetail, feral hogs and Black Bear in WV.

Vortex strike king 1x8x24 SFP. No need for a first focal plane IMHO.

Welcome to the forum from the center of the universe located in central Virginia. This Leupoid 3 X9 has not given me any reason for concern. The only change I made was to take off the factory muzzle break and attached a muzzle device that directs the muzzle blast away from my ears. Shoot it once or twice without hearing protection and you'll see what I mean. The deer in this picture wasn't shot too far from the WV line over in Highland County, VA. Good hunting and enjoy your new rifle.anything but Leupold
Saint .308 will get job done. I have hundreds of hogs down with one. Quit counting frankly. My teenage son even rocks the .308 SaintIt appears there is a wealth of knowledge to be tapped here! Vortex seems to be in the majority, so I'll research these and let you all know what my final choice will be. Not new to hunting, but using an AR 10 in the field will be a first this coming season. I'll share my stories as they unfold my fellow Upholders of The 2nd Amendment!
Good advice. That super fine target crosshairs may be great on the range but it’s not worth a lot when Bambi’s Dad is trotting through the woods 150 yards our.Best is relative based on your needs and budget.
Most mid-range optics, such as Vortex, and Sig have good glass but it's important to get a reticle that works for you & your conditions.
IMO, many reticles are too fine for use in forested conditions since the fine stadia hash-marks disappear into a vegetated background. Many scopes now-a-days have a illuminating ability but while that may work well in low-light conditions having to turn it on during the middle of the day is a "fail" in my book.
I've found reticles with a combination thicker stadia-lines on the outside with thinner lines in the center works for background conditions where finer lines are difficult to use. There are several manufacturers that offer that combinations..
Recently, I've found/moved to the Sig Sauer optics with these examples/types of reticles.

Also, select a power range that works for your area/conditions, and platform.
Both power range and reticle will vary based on the cost of the optic, based on your budget.
Lastly, fancy reticles are the rage today but if you don't have the capability, skill, and conditions to use them, keep it simple.
Some Sig options.
