Black Powder Shot Shells

It was lots of fun to make your own Black Powder Shotgun Shell loads for Cowboy Action Shooting. Got the recipe from an old relative who called them "Quacker Smackers!"
We used whatever plastic hulls we could scrounge, paper over powder wads, and fiber wads for spacing between powder and shot. The Federal Shotshell Primer seemed to be the hottest. Goex FF Black Powder was easier to find and cheaper than Swiss and #6 shot to really hit the required knock down targets. All the ingredients were put together on a Mec Jr. reloader and maintained a good factory crimp once the proper interior spacing was acquired. Everything cycled and shot very well in a Winchester '97. These shells played havoc on metal targets in Idaho and brought home lots of pheasants from North Dakota.

My oldest brother-in-law ( now deceased ) was into black powder guns back in the day. He had Black powder shotguns and rifles. Thanksgiving morning early My dad , sometimes and uncle , and I would go Quail hunting . After the big meal we would go out rabbit hunting with all the in laws and outlaws .

One year my Oldest B-I-L decided to use his muzzle loading double shotgun. It was misty day and no wind. About 20 yards down fence row a rabbit jumped and he fired at it. Took 10 minutes for the smoke to clear so we could see if he hit it. LOL He did and it was the only rabbit we saw that afternoon.

Great memories and thanks for posting .

Seems like it was be easier on my reloaders. But then why wouldn't I just reload regular shells. I have no Damascus barrels.
Well, I'll tell ya. Shooting a full power Black Powder Shot Shell is an entirely different experience. Its a different sound to begin with, more of a BOOM than a bang. Then there is the fire and the smoke that engulfs everything in front of you. Shooting trap at night with those shells will draw a crowd. I was lucky enough to get a couple 25's with my old tight chocked '97. :D

I have a few black powder rifles. No desire for a black powder shotgun.
