I think it was decided that having an open slot on the top of a battle rifle wasn't a great idea, but it does work well.as crazy as the chargehandle looks i kinda like it. best ambi chargehandle there is by design

The one I shot in basic back in 1967 didn't have a forward assist. I have heard that people that hunt with AR sometimes use it. Trying to quietly chamber a round, they ease the charging handle forward and then hit the FA to make sure the bolt seats all the way.I know that I am an infinitely small sample size, but I have never needed a forward assist on any of my semi-auto 5.56 rifles.
