C.A.I. M1 30.06

I recently purchased this rifle and i have the serial number and the manufacturer, now I'm wondering if there is any way to find out the history of this rifle. I fired one in boot camp(had the M1 thumb to prove it) and have wanted one for a long time. So, anyone have an idea if or how this weapon can be traced?

The C.A.I. M1 Garand was not made under military contract but as a commercial offering.

Century Arms International (CAI) M1 Garand rifles are generally split into two distinct categories: rifles that Century simply imported, and rifles that Century assembled in-house using cast receivers and surplus parts kits.

Types of CAI M1 Garands
  • Imported Rifles: Some M1 Garands were imported directly into the U.S. by Century Arms from places like China, Morocco, or through European/Italian contracts. These feature standard, original military-issued (USGI) receivers and are typically considered reliable, though they carry Century import markings.
  • Cast-Receiver Parts Kits: Century also built M1 Garands domestically by mating commercial cast receivers with surplus USGI parts kits (such as Springfield Armory, Harrington & Richardson, or Beretta/Breda parts).

Quality and Safety Concerns
  • Cast Receivers: Unlike original forged steel U.S. military M1 Garand receivers, CAI's domestic receivers are cast.
  • Spec & Metallurgy Issues: Collectors and gunsmiths on forums like Reddit and Milsurps widely warn that early CAI-cast receivers (especially serial numbers under 2,000) can be out-of-specification or suffer from soft metallurgy, leading to operational failures (op-rod binding, sticky actions, or headspace concerns). Later receivers (such as those sourced through contractors like Lithgow) tend to have better quality control.
  • Value of Parts: Many shooters view a cast-receiver CAI Garand as essentially "worth the sum of its USGI parts"—meaning the trigger groups, bolts, barrels, and wood furniture are often high-grade military surplus, even if the receiver itself is scrutinized.
