Can you make the shot?

Just watched another TV show where the 200lb, 6' plus guy is holding a gun/knife on a hostage whos maybe 130lbs and 5'3". The hero is standing maybe 10 feet away with his weapon aimed at the bad guy but he doesnt shoot....

I know its Hollywood and its supposed to be dramatic; but Id soooo much like to see the hero shoot him in the face and end the hold off with a spray of pink mist.

When I was in the police academy we had red plastic guns for scenario training. One of our SWAT guys was playing a bad guy as I walked into a convenience store robbery on my way to get a cup of coffee. I was "supposed" to back out and call for a supervisor and more help. Instead I drew my red plastic gun and told the bad guy to "freeze"; just like on Adam 12. The bad guy who was 6'+ grabbed the female clerk 5'2" 110lbs, and held the gun to her head. I said "drop the gun" (more Adam 12 talk). He said "I guess we have a Mexican standoff" I said "Nope and re holstered my gun" walked to the coffee counter then called for a supervisor and a coroner and poured a cup of coffee.

The instructors were yelling WTF. I said "He pointed the gun at her and I shot him in the face, so I figured I deserved a free cup of coffee"....."and I was looking for a rag to help the clerk wipe the brains from her hair". As you might imagine it didnt go well.

This is from one of my last qualifications. The two lower shots were when we were ordered to put two in the body and one in the head. I scored 100% and youd have thought I forgot to zip my pants. The range sergeant called my into his office and screamed about it not looking good. I told him some bad guys wear armor and they can buy it on eBay for $100 or make it from stuff at the Depot stores for less than $50. I mentioned some bad guys wear bombs on their chest and bullets dont mix well with bombs. Then I said head shots always change the bad guys disposition. He screamed some more about it not looking good. So I asked him which of his stripes were for being an art critic....then he screamed to get out of his office

So when Heaven points a finger at you, can you take the shot?

We have run the precision shot drill many times. I incorporated the drill into my courses. Saving a hostage may have one option. It is also important for every shooter to know their capabilities and limitations. One shot precision drills give you immediate feedback of your skill level and can be humbling. It may show you the shot you should not try. I like 1-shot drills from the ready, in one second, it gets the blood pumping. Practice atcontact range, then 3 yards, then move back to 5 and 7. It is a perishable skill that you need to practice often for proficiency.

Don't do this
