Can Your .380 Fight a Rifle?

In my opinion .380 is marginal as a manstopper. With the plethora of more powerful calibers in micro guns, it is nearly irrelevant. With that said, a late friend and fellow instructor was able to consistently hit an 8" steel plate with a P238 in .380 at 100 yards. You had to.listen hard to hear the steel ring. He was an extraordinary shooter and spent countless hours and rounds on the range developing those skills. He said he could break an opponent's concentration at that range to buy time. My preference if someone is trying to tag me with a rifle, is to unass the kill zone. And get Belt Fed to lay down covering fire.
For a pocket pistol, it is the largest caliber that tends to be manageable for follow-up shots.

Another silly “what if” to sell a HC? No way would I underestimate an opponent with a rifle. Too many potential variables in his favor.

False.

My Kahr PM9 (9mm) is very manageable.

I had a PPKS, my only .380, and found it lacking on multiple parts. Once I had the PM9 and found it superior I got rid of the .380.

to get to my rifle.
Ive heard that a lot and I kinda wonder about the logic. On the surface it sounds great, and maybe it is; but breaking contact and coming back with superior equipment is gonna take time (a lot) and now maybe YOU look like the bad guy (depends on your location and WHAT rifle/gear you come back with). This is why I carry and suggest a full size pistol with a red dot. I know thats not always possible; but I think more times than not. Only you can determine that.

If your daily wear is able to support a full size gun with an optic, making 50 meter body shots is easily possible. Still there are times when something smaller is all that is appropriate. Over the holidays I attended a formal party, so I set aside my full size pistol for a PPK in a shoulder holster. There I gave up the longer range potential to appear unarmed.

Use whatever works for you.

As I said, tends to be… I did not make an absolute statement.

Take it from a reloader/wildcatter, there is a lot of umpf in that little 380 case that is never used by factory ammo. I can duplicate most 9mm factory ammo save for a few defense rounds and +p. You wont ever do it by staying inside the lines of today's lawyer proof loading manuals but it's there.

Think of 9mm major power factor only scaled down. You CAN get near 1200fps out of a 90gr project if you try.

That being said, I dont carry one so have no dog in this race.

I carry a 380 on occasions, other times I carry a 9mm hellcat for just knocking around, other times I carry a .40 or 45, all are sub compact, I researched the best ammo to carry in all of them including the 380, the research was from penetration and expansion during gel test. The best performing 380 ammo i saw was the federal premium 90g hydra shock with the federal 99g hst coming in a close second. Always carry and be safe.
