Cane For Personal Protection

A nice Irish blackthorn is a good companion when you can’t have something better. “It’s my cane and need it to walk” will get it into anyplace you need to go -just remember to use it in there. Walking back to the car/hotel in a city it makes a decent club should such be required😏

If I tell you all the fun will be gone.🫣
If you have different shoes or you don't wear shoes around the house you according to orthopedic surgeon a person should use different canes because of how you stand using a cane changes posture so you may ending having more shoulder or back pain. The surgeries on my back has pain no matter what but elbow and shoulder with tendons reattached at different points create problems and getting older with those changes. That's when the fun begins.

I am amazed what as little as one half inch does in arm position with a cane. It is recommended to adjust the length with shoes on, but when I occasionally use a cane with bare feet it feels like my arm is really bent. I used an aluminum adjustable cane that I had been using before my Canemaster cane to set the length. Even different cane tips will make a difference to stay in the sweet spot length. And on that note a cushiony cane tip although a bit longer feels much better. I had added a foam grip to my dojo cane because of my arthritic hands, but the one inch diameter of my Walk Around cane is comfortable.

A straight cane can be an effective weapon, some cane fu and you have the slash, jab, upper cut, butt stroke, double strike and then just club'em. All you need to do is just watch some old Bat Masterson shows!
Yes, but the hook assures I will always have the better grip on the cane. But there are plenty of videos on good self defense techniques with a cane, but many techniques are not practical unless you have a willing partner like on the videos 😁.

Proper sizing (length) of the cane is important. I ordered my cane length with my normal shoes on in mind. I've had total knee replacement on both knees, and my orthopedic surgeon highly recommended that I wear shoes in the house also. I have the same type of shoes that I normally wear outside and inside. Outside shoes come off when I come in the house, and the same type of shoes that are just for inside use go on when I get in the house. The only time I don't wear shoes now is sleeping, showering, or prolonged relaxing in the recliner. That short amount of time shoeless isn't that much of a big deal using my cane. And I can pretty much get around just fine inside my house without using the cane.

Amen to that.
I found that if I do any amount of walking a walking stick keeps my back straighter lessening stress on the rest of my body.

As I have gotten older (now 72), I am finding I am having more and more times when I find myself off balance when walking. I have started using my walking stick, and while it helps, it is not the right size. So, to get into the cane time of my life, I have ordered this......https://a.co/d/07MmVYuj. It is a "starter" cane for me to determine if I really want to do the "cane" thing. If it works out, I can see a Cane Masters cane in my future.

Proper length is everything, check out Canemaster for proper length. One thing I have found is the hook cane is a lot easier to manage being able to hook it on my arm for hands free tasks. When pushing a shopping cart my cane hangs on my arm, I have accidentally left it in the shopping cart a couple of times 😲. Another thing about the Canemaster cane is it is more stout than my first cheaper cane and sure feels more secure for mobility. If I get another I wouldn’t go with the real dark stain, when I got a scuff on it covering it was not easy to cover due to the treatment before they stained it.
Another low priced option is their Dojo cane for 65.00. It is only 7/8” instead of 1” and lighter weight but extremely strong.

Well you find that as time marches on you will appreciate the cane. I started using a cane full time in 2007 and I have several. I have a lanyard on all of mine so I don't leave it leaning against the check out counter..

Proper length is everything, check out Canemaster for proper length.

I bought a cane from Canemaster right after I got out of the hospital. According to their website you were supposed to measure from the floor to your wrist bone with your hand hanging straight. I did that and I sent that measurement and the cane was still about an inch too short.

I would recommend measuring as Canemaster says and then adding an inch.

There was no way in hell my wife was going to let me order another Cane for 50 bucks and really I don't generally need a cane but if I do I take one of my walking sticks, which I think make better weapons anyway

Proper length is with the shoes or boots that you will be wearing, a mistake many make.
They can be expensive depending on the cane you pick.
I wanted to get it right the first time.
I was using a cheap adjustable drugstore cane and played with that for a few days to come up with a length. I ordered the cane long and cut it to size 1/2 inch at a time, 1/2” can make a big difference for proper fit.
When I was done my cane came to the position on my wrist that Canemaster’s said it should.
Even though I have the size now I would still order it long and cut it myself.

On another note on length, on my canes I wanted more cushion on my cane tips so I bought cushioning tips off Amazon and they add a bit over 3/4” to the length.

I wouldn't want to carry one in public as if it gets away from you you will be beat by your own cane. It has happened here.

You can say that about any weapon, you can have a gun taken away from you and get shot with it.
If you are incapable of defending yourself with a stick your abilities to defend yourself is in bad shape and training is needed. There are training classes and videos on how to defend yourself with a cane.
But just like any weapon, if you can’t use it don’t bring it.
The one big advantage to a cane is it is in your hand at the time of an attack and can give you time to get to a primary weapon like a gun.
