Every night in Boot Camp (MCRDSD Oct 81 to Dec 81) we’d sing the first verse of the Marine Corps hymn while lying on our racks at the position of attention. Then, IIRC, “Good night Chesty, wherever you are”. At which point the drill instructor would give the command “rest”. Within a few seconds, we’d all be asleep, except for the fire watch.

As a retired USMC LtCol, I clearly love Chesty. The article is great. However, although Chesty earned 5 Navy Crosses and a Distinguished Service Cross, I feel MajGen Smedley Butler is in contention as well. Sure, Chesty had more total awards. At the time of his death Butler was the most decorated Marine. He was awarded 2 Medals of Honor, one of only 2 Marines with that distinction and the only officer. He was previously recommended for earlier Medal of Honor, during the Spanish American War, but at that time, officers were not eligible. Instead, he was awarded the Marine Corps Brevet Medal, which was on an equal level as the Navy Cross. Either way, both gentlemen were bad asses. Oorah!

I knew a Marine MP named Mike. He died about 20 years ago but told me about guarding the houses of ill-repute in Hawaii and being assigned to keeping Chesty from doing anything too crazy. I don't remember which island it was they took from the Japanese but he said they had to follow Chesty around while he shot at birds (quail?) with a Thompson Machine Gun. He said Chesty was nuts and a heck of a Marine. Semper Fi
