Christopher Miner Spencer: The Unsung Father of Repeating Long Guns

Truly amazing story. The US Army had Spencer’s (and Henry) repeaters, combat proven, yet the civil war ends, the repeaters are sold off and the Army goes with single shot trapdoors. It’s worth noting that the number of Spencer’s alone would have been sufficient to COMPLETELY equip the entire post war Army. Yet, just a few years later Custer and his troops are wiped out while carrying their single shot Springfields. Meanwhile, archeologists have found a LOT of 56-50 and .44 Henry brass on the battlefield! Seems the Indians HAD repeaters…..surplus rifles sold BY the Army. Your tax dollars at work.
