Col. Charles Askins: An Unremorseful Reprobate

It’s been a long time since I have read anything about him but wasn’t he on the border that shot first asked questions later if they were alive? Also had the trigger guard removed from his service revolver so he could get to the trigger faster. Still holds the record for being brought up on charges the most for any border patrol agent?

The Trigger guard was Fritz Special pioneered by John Fitzgerald

Side note I got to run some rounds out of a Fritz Spexial modified by Mr Fritz himself at Snub Revolver roundup (pre Revolverfest) a couple years ago

I’ve seen the Fritz special but I was thinking that can be dangerous at my age if reading Askin did it to his service revolver first. I can’t even remember where I read it it has been so long. I could be totally off.

With the poundage and travel distance in a DA revolver No, Tried in a striker fired (Glocks or etc) Yes

In the DA revolver days it wasn’t uncommon for folk's to be trained to start their trigger pull on the draw and homsters even had the trigger and part of the trigger guard exposed. The Jordan Border Patrol Holstwr was one example (I was issued in in the IsAF in the mid 1980’s)

The other safety in that was in the holster along with the DA pull on it’s own the cylinder had tension on it from the holster so if you caused a wheelgun to fire in the holster you were committed to it.

That DA pull caused forgiveness and peolme got away with bad admin skills. We shouldn’t have handled guns like we did and learned better.
Especially With the advent of Glocks and agencies discovered Glock leg they changed that

Below is what was standard USAF and BP issue in the 70’s and 80’s.
And it shows the exposed trigger and we didn’t go around shootjng ourselves in the leg.
We were allowed Safariland comp 2 speedloaders but the dunp pouches with speed strips were also issued
