Concealed Carrying During a Traffic Stop: What Every Armed Citizen Should Know ~ VIDEO

Full disclosure, I haven't been pulled over for 13 or 14 years.

I do not agree with proactively informing the police that I'm armed. I understand it was legal requirement where that video was filmed but it's not a legal requirement in Colorado so I don't do it.

I've talked about this before too, my wallet is connected to my car keys so as soon as I take my keys out of the ignition my driver's license is right there in my hands my registration and proof of insurance are on the visor right above me.

If a cop ever asked me if any weapons in the vehicle I wouldn't say a word I just handed my permit and at that point I'd probably be exercising my right to remain silent.

ETA: I encountered cops two or three times a week when I was working as a security guard and I don't think a single one of them ever even acknowledged the fact that I was carrying a gun.

I’ve have a tail of 2 LEO’s. Now let me start with my CCL comes up with my DL when checked. The first one was a county that didn’t see that I had a CCL when it came to my DL. He freaked out because in Illinois I don’t have to inform him until he asks. The 2nd local police officer was cool about it.

Honestly I don’t go out of my way to do anything stupid. I’m not a big party person or crowds anymore.

I live in TX and have a TX LTC (License to Carry). I very seldom ever get pulled over, and if I do, it's always for some minor infraction that I've always got off on a warning. TX has a duty to inform the officer if you are a LTC carrier. Here is a funny story from not quite 10 years ago. I had a childhood buddy visiting my wife and I with his wife. He is a retired AF Lt. Colonel who flew A-10s and F-16s. He is a pilot for Southwest. He and his wife live in Wisconsin and have that states equivalent to a TX LTC. TX does share reciprocity with Wisconsin. And we were all armed. We were all in my truck driving out to a local indoor range to do some shooting. I was speeding a little bit and was pulled over. As soon as I was stopped, I rolled down all the windows. I already had my license, insurance, and LTC out of my wallet and ready to show him. You could kind of see his eyes widen up behind his sunglasses when I told him I had a LTC and was armed, my wife had her LTC and was armed, my visiting friends in the back seat from out of state had their version of their states LTC and were both also armed. I then also told him I also had a couple of cased pistols in the truck that I had brought along to shoot also. Then my buddy's wife went straight into that mid-western Wisconsin hokey mode, being all chatty and friendly with her funny accent. That made him start to laugh and get into a conversation with my buddy and his wife. He ran my license because he had to, it being a legal stop and all, but he let me off with a verbal warning and let us go on our way. Also told us good luck at the range. Anyway, I am never a Richard head to police. I always comply and do so in a friendly way. The worst I've had in about 30 years is a written warning. Just don't ask me about things I've done in the last century! lol

In my state, we do not have duty to inform unless asked. That said, when A LEO runs your driver's license, it informs them that you have a concealed carry license. I don't know if that notification pops up if I'm stopped in another state. When I travel out of state, I check the laws of the states I'm traveling through thoroughly to avoid unknowingly breaking their laws. In states with no reciprocity, I rely on the Federal Safe Passage Laws.
