Contact with Law Enforcement

This is why I have respect for and give respect to Law Enforcement. Especially with the political/violent climate they have to deal with today. And especially since I do carry. No matter your opinion on Law Enforcement, people don't realize the level of restraint they have to exercise everyday, and especially in domestic violence and child abuse situations. I could not be a LEO. I know I would put a lead slug into a child molester, especially if they had murdered the child, or a male who beat up his wife/girlfriend or mother. I don't have that level of self discipline, and that is what I respect and admire the most about Law Enforcement. Yes, there are some ash hats, as in every walk of life. But people cannot fathom the level of depravity, violence and acts of evil these officers have to deal with, then go home to their families and know what kind of world their children are walking into. Same with the Military.
I could not be LEO into today's climate and my wife is glad that I am not in that line even though my retirement was by disability.

The last time I got pulled over it was a State Trooper on Highway 50 down by Pueblo.

He walked up to my car and introduced himself.

I'm Trooper Soandso with the Colorado State Patrol The reason I stopped you was excessive speed. I clocked you at Xmiles an hour In a 30 mile an hour zone. I will be citing you for your speed today. May I please have your license registration and proof of insurance.

He took all the room for argument right out of the interaction from the beginning.

He had the citation written and I was on my way in less than 10 minutes.

If you're going to pull somebody over that's the way to do it

I responded to a Domestic on a super cold New Years morning. the husband and wife were still drunk and wouldnt shut up. I hadnt had my first coffee yet. All I wanted was to make sure they were safe (no violence) and get the info for the 3+ page report. I ususally tried to keep them in different corners of the room so I could get their version of events; but the husband wouldnt shut up and got progressively angrier. So I asked him if he wanted to "step outside so we could resolve things like men". When he said "Yes", I let him go out the door first, then locked the door. He was wearing a T-shirt and lounge pants. I got the wife's info and her side of the story, then opened the door for the husband, who had "cooled down". He apologized and so did I. Then he told the wife he was sorry. I had a report to write and get approved; But first COFFEE

When Id make a radar stop, I never stopped anyone for less than 20miles over the limit (that was kinda hard for the driver to defend in court). I used to hope the driver wasnt wearing his seatbelt. I say sir I stopped you for speeding and youre not wearing your seatbelt. The fine for speeding is (was) $70 and two points. The fine for not wearing your seat belt is $25 and no points. Which citation would you like.... Nobody ever asked for the speeding ticket. My boss was happy that he got to put another check mark in the "stat" book and the driver got away cheap(er) with no points and I got to get another cup of COFFEE

As others here , I also have had a couple interactions with bad cops. However I want to tell of a very good interaction with a state trooper one day......

I was dating a gal whose car was broke down so I was taking her to work. I was there waiting to take her to work when her mother ask me if I would go get her much younger son from basketball practice. So The brother who was only a couple years younger than the girlfriend and I jump in my comet , Yes the one that was jacked up all way around with hot motor , headed to the school to get him. Unfortunately one of his teem mates was being a butthole so coach held them over a half hour to run laps. This put a kink in the time line to get girlfriend to work on time.

So he gets out and in the car and we head for his home. Keep in mind there was very little traffic on the roads in this area. I am running about a 100 MPH when the elder brother looks at speedo and says with a grin , won't this thing run any faster. So I take it up around 120 and are humming along when we topped a hill and there sat Mr trooper running radar. I get on the brakes hard but I know he has me dead to rights , just didn't know how bad he had me.

I pull over and get out . During this time frame you got in the car with the LEO. I get in his squad and hand him my license. He is kinda grinning and asks the big question.. any reason for your speed today. Tell him yes but not good enough for him to not write a ticket. He tells me to tell him it just might be. So I start telling him and he starts writing. LOL Now , I didn't know what he got me locked in at because the gun was turned so I couldn't see it and I really didn't want to ask the number that was on that gun. So after I get through telling him the reason , he says well since you are helping everyone maybe they will help you with the cost of the ticket. Dang smartaleck LOL So I finally ask what he got me at , he again grins and says well with your front bumper on the pavement I locked you in at 76 MPH. Then he says so just how fast were you running. I said sir , I really don't want to tell you that. LOL He told me he already had the ticket written so he was just curios . When I told him in the neighborhood of 120 he nodded his head. I asked how much it was goingt to cost me and here was part of the good part.. He says well if I write the speed at 76 you have to go to court and I have to go to court. He says I don't want to go to court , do you want to. Nope was my reply. He says I wrote you for 70 MPH. I thanked him and started getting out of the car. He says to me , by the way there is another trooper at such and such so you might want to slow down before you get there. (y) to the trooper. He knew I was going to turn the little Comet loose again trying to get my girlfriend to work on time. So when I got to that area I slowed down and a trooper was there . I waved at him and he waved back.

Now you guys got me remembering old stories. Whenever Dispatch titled a call "DOMESTIC" we had to write a 3 page report and it had to be signed off by a Sargant and Lieutenant before we could go home. It didnt matter if it was a real DOMESTIC or if the nosey neighbor heard something that turned out to be the TV playing too loud.

Every Friday night we had a couple that would get into an argument. Typically it was because one of them drank the last beer. They were in their late 60s and otherwise a nice couple but when they drank they were a PIA. So one night I asked, "Do you guys just want to be divorced?" They said "YES", and I had them put their hands on my badge and told them "By the powers invested in me, I now pronounce you divorced". Id stop back on Sunday mornings and re-marry them. They used to snicker and say they had the best sex because they were divorced.

Everything was fine until I got delayed one Sunday morning and they called 911 asking for me to come Marry them..... I had some explaining to do when I got back to the station. My boss was pissed but at least he didnt have any domestic reports to sign...

Cops have a tough and dangerous life. They never know what to expect or who they’ll encounter. You have no idea what they’ve dealt with that day. You give a cop a hard time you are asking for problems, and as in most situations you ask for trouble you’ll likely get it. You treat him with courtesy and respect and you’ll usually be treated the same. Treat him decently and if he can give you a break he usually will. Give him a hard time and he’ll likely give you the max that you can. Are there LEO’s who are jerks? Yeah, there are a few (like ANY group). Regardless, you’ll still have a better outcome if you act decently.

I always wanted to answer an officer when they asked if I knew why they pulled me over, "Because you saw me before I saw you?" I guess that won't happen as sometimes I get passed by kids on bicycles. Oh well.
Tell them the flux capacitor malfunctioned and you were supposed to arrive in 2040. Or that the warp drive must be out of calibration. Or one of those darn Tribbles got caught between your foot and the accelerator pedal. Somebody down below switched off the cloaking device........

In my humble unsolicited opinion, it seems to me that if both parties act like grownups there is nothing to worry about. I have seen so many videos of people that automatically become defensive, which puts the cop into a defensive mode also, and he/she has to maintain control of the situation/interaction.
Things go south fast when big attitude is introduced into the scene. Like what was said earlier, the place to argue semantics is in a courtroom, not by the side of the road. Nobody wants to turn a traffic stop into a really bad day for everyone involved.

DooNuttins. "He didnnnnt do nuthin wrong, all he did was shoot a cop." Yep Ive heard that one
Yep. Products of a feral violent subculture where there is no positive role model in the home, no discipline, no limits, no impulse control, and programmed to hate authority. Add substance abuse and stir. Violence between police and these thugs is inevitible. It's the recipe for a young violent death or life in prison.
