DA/SA vs SAO

Musashi

Master Class
"User preference often depends on intended use. SAO is frequently favored for range shooting due to its consistent, crisp trigger, while DA/SA is often recommended for carry and home defense because of the safer, heavier first trigger pull. Some shooters appreciate the versatility of DA/SA, while others prefer the simplicity and precision of SAO, especially if they are already familiar with 1911-style pistols."

Do you folks agree with this statement? Which do you prefer?

In my experience:

I get faster, more accurate shots with a SAO than a DA/SA; I tend to really “crush” the trigger on a DA/SA with my second shot due to the inconsistency in trigger press, and tend to drop it low.

That being said? My most common carry is DAO (revolver)…and I’m almost as fast with one…pretty sure it’s due to the consistency in press.

And my bedside handgun is also a revolver.

This pretty much is the same. Since retiring about 75 percent of my carry is a revolver. Either the model 60 around the homestead and woods or the .380 Taurus in my hip pocket any time I put on my pants generally. Both are almost exclusively fired DA. The times I cock the hammer on the 60 are very rare.

I had a Kahr P9 I couldn't hit the side of a barn door with.
I’ve shot Kahr’s; I don’t dislike them, I think they have a pretty decent DAO trigger…I just refuse to give money to the Moonies.

That being said, a nice DAO auto can run nicely; particularly the “light” DAO options like HK’s LEM or Sig’s DAK; S&W’s DAO options were some of the nicest I’ve ever shot.

While a 1911 is a pretty good fighting handgun (as in your thwre to fight) The best kept secret in defensive carry guns and for LE where you take prisoners is simply the HK LEM system
LEM’s are as easy as a striker to shoot but as safe as a hammer fired. What gets shokters in trouble is lengthy of pull not weight. It’s got no weight til the wall just a king DA length pull and it breach’s better than a striker
Resets like a SAO with hammer cocked and a short reset then let off trigger hammer decocker its self

You can also stage it like a Da revolver (which is better than a striker) for say a 50 yard shot if that’s your thing.
I have 2 as of last night. A HK45 LEM and I just picked up a HK P30L LEM to use as my next duty gun.

They allow you to be deliberate but in the age of the go fast gotta have .20 split times some don’t think hammer fired is cool enough!

My preferred semi-autos are the 1911 and Hi-Power. So that puts me in the SAO camp.
However, I also often carry revolvers and shoot them DAO.
OTOH, my favorite DA/SA pistols are the older P-200 series all metal Sig Sauers. And I do carry one of those from time to time. I will admit that the transition from DA to SA throws me off a little. But I can manage. ;)

What I find about the LEM that’s really an advantage is that it’s got a fairly short reset; you don’t HAVE to let the trigger go all the way forward in order to take your next shot.

Short-stroking was definitely an issue for me as I transitioned to DAO triggers, and the LEM was a good “training wheel”.

At the end of the day?

This is why I carry revolvers most of the time.

But I also practice with other autos to stay…current.
I have specific people I train with. For those sessions I shoot what I carry and usually an AR. When I take my regular friends with me to the range I’ll shoot different stuff. Usually large revolvers and house guns like the XD Mod 2 or the P30L. When I go by myself I always carry a handgun, but honestly I’ll spend most of my time with the shotguns.

My house guns are revolvers, USP’s, and now my Prodigy…”long guns” are MP5’s and Benelli shotguns.

I’ve tried to love on the 1301T, but that oddball charging button on the lifter keeps throwing me; gonna end up getting a M4.
