Have a Japanese rifle and bayonet my uncle brought home from Guadalcanal. 1st Marine Division Marine. Was with them all the way to China. RIP Cosimo ( Casey). You are still my fave uncle! Interestingly many more Naval personnel were KIA than grunts during this campaign. Also a good read with a book named The Cactus Air Force and Neptunes Inferno about the campaign at sea.

Contrary to popular belief, the Marines were not denied the M1s by some mysterious higher command. Marine lrsderhip felt the new rifle was not proven and issued them to support units rather than frontline troops for the campaign on Guadacanal.

Can you expand on this?
I know of one person who was there but unfortunately he passed many decades ago.
Maybe this is a question that Capt. Dye should research.
