Discussion: Could You Weak-Hand Draw If You Had To?

I do practice this once in a while. Let's face it - it's not for the weak of heart nor the range limited and you will not be setting any speed records. Carefully and slowed down most can do it but we are facing the fact that our main draw hand/arm is tied up/damaged etc. Hope is not a plan but neither is being unrealistic. If someone is atop or in the straddle and you can't draw properly maybe go for the knife first. If you are slowly struggling to get out the pistol, possibly there are better choices as the attacker(s) might just snatch it and let you have it with your own gun. A toss up either way.

There is a heck of a lot easier way to draw weak handed. Just carry and train to shoot weak handed. When I moved away from autos to revolvers 3 years ago, i wanted to learn to shoot with dominate eye which is my weak hand. Now I carry OWB on left and IWB strong side. Most often a snub is strong side.

Yes and I practice on dominate hand. In the Range-Master Master instructor course we are required to use a NDH holster and shokt quite a but. As an instructor you need to know how to teach opposite hand people.

As for non Insteuctor hih should be proficient with both. And not so much for the ole “if you get hit in your strong arm” much more real is at some point you will have to have hand, wrist or shoulder surgery and or break something on your dominant hand/arm and then is not the time to try the other hand!

Absolutely, people are always taking about hand strength as we age and disabilities. It’s an added benefit.
