Discussion: How Much Ammo Should I Carry?

Most of the time in summer, I carry my Smith model 638. A five shot 38 spl. Would I want more rounds in an extended fight? Yeah. But for the vast majority of a threat I might face, this is enough. And I don’t worry about having a defective magazine.

An important point about carry ammo: if you cycle it in and out of the chamber multiple times (often rotating the same top two rounds in your carry mag when you empty the gun to shoot cheaper ammo for practice), you can break the little primer pellet and then that high quality, expensive defensive round will be a dud. It’s happened to me twice—fortunately discovered while shooting up my carry ammo on the range and not in some dark parking lot. In fairness, I had probably unloaded and reloaded those two rounds in the top of my carry mag several dozen times each.

Now, I'm gentle in re-chambering my carry ammo after a range session, being careful to ensure that the slide still fully returns to battery. AND, I shoot-up and replace my EDC mag ammo every few months.

Tom Givens advocates, out of an abundance of caution, replacing any defensive rounds that have been chambered more than twice.

A new box of carry ammo once per year seems to me to be cheap insurance.

I shoot my carry gun about every week so I do unload and re-load my carry ammo quite a bit. I agree you can only do that a certain number of times. I shoot up my carry ammo every 6 months and have not had a problem with it not going bang

I started carrying a small waist pack most days when I go out. I can easily stash my wallet, keys, meds, disposable hearing protection etc along with 3-4 extra 15rd mags for my Shield X.

All indexed nicely and strapped in so they don't rattle. Shield X itself rides in a Phlster Enigma at 3 o'clock and I think I will forever sing the praises of Phlsters Enigma system. It's far and away the best CCW holster system I have used or seen so far.

10. 5 in the gun and 5 on a speed strip. I do carry a full box in the glove compartment. Never know when you're going to find a bunch of good ol boys down at the gravel pit banging away and decide to join in. Just another example of the joys of living out in the willy wags.

Hello all, here is today's article posted on TheArmoryLife.com. It is titled How Much Ammo Should I Carry? and can be found at https://www.thearmorylife.com/how-much-ammo-should-i-carry/.

How many times you plan to miss? That answers your question. Despite all the Tactical Timmy’s fears, as a civilian you ain’t going to a war in an SD scenario. Thus far, I’ve never seen or hears of an SD scenario where reloads (or Multiple reloads) were involved. Do what makes you feel warm and fuzzy but don’t get into the Rambo syndrome unless you just enjoy packing a lot of extra weight. Wish I had a $ for every gun shop commando who waxes eloquent about the need to pack a “full size, hi cap” and 2-3 extra mags who, when confronted, finally admitted theirs was “in the truck” or “at home” that day……that ol’ 5 shot J frame in your pocket ALL the times trumps the tacticool master blaster that’s somewhere else…..
