The M3 trench knife was adopted into service in 1943. Originally it was issued to special need troops like paratroopers. Eventually it was issued in all theaters.
Later in the war a need for a bayonet for the M1 Carbine. The blade and handke of the m3 were taken and a bayonet pommel and guard were added and voila the M4 M1 carbine bayonet was born.
I have to say I prefer the old issued handle size , the size difference is easy to see, and finish and the blade finish to the just purchased new Ontario version.
