Not sure where youre from or what you hunt; but in places where I have hunted 30-06 is a medium bore. I also know hunters in MD/PA that handload 458 lite for Whitetail, so they can use the same gun in Alaska and AfrikaRifles in those calibers are said to kill with one end and cripple with the other! In my part of North America if I can’t kill whatever with a 30.06 or .308 then I’ll have a bigger problem: it ain’t from earth!
I deer hunt out in the western mountains of Virginia. Most shots are under 100 yards through the brush. A larger caliber would probably be over kill. Not sure where youre from or what you hunt; but in places where I have hunted 30-06 is a medium bore. My objection to 458 wasnt the cartridge, it was the that the No1 is too light for a full power 458 Mag
There are parts of PA that are very much the same. The same guys the swear by 45-70 also like 458 win (with lite loads). Not all Big Bores have to be shoulder crushers. It depends on a lot of things, not the least being the weight of the rifle. Ive got shotguns that kick more than my 470 Nitro ExpressMost shots are under 100 yards through the brush.
I've bagged all my deer with a 30-30 lever action in less than 100 yds and with open iron sights...in NH and MT. My favorite manner of the hunt is walking slow and quiet with momentary breaks, or simply sit in a spot that appears promising, and do it alone.I deer hunt out in the western mountains of Virginia.
