Form 1 Suppressors Being Denied

The American Suppressor Association has sent out a “take action now notice" for the ATF's sudden rule change regarding Form 1 suppressor applications being denied en masse.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On February 28th, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) summarily denied 847 Form 1 applications to make a suppressor because they believed the applicants were using solvent trap kits. On March 3rd, ATF notified thousands of applicants with pending Form 1 suppressor applications that they will be required to provide pictures and descriptions of all parts and components that will be used to make the suppressor, or their application will be disapproved. None of this information is collected or required on the existing Form 1 application.

I probably shouldn't be, but I'm actually surprised at how brazenly the ATF is willing to just declare literally all homemade suppressors to be illegal solvent traps without any evidence whatsoever. There is an approximately 0% chance of this holding up in any court outside of California or Hawaii. The ATF is doing this simply to inconvenience citizens who are trying to exercise their rights. Chipman was a horrible choice to head the ATF, but even he would probably hesitate to deny 100% of applications without any type of investigation or evidence.

What is crazy is the form 1 is a request to build one. Lots of places won’t even sell parts until you prove you have an approved form 1 from the atf already.

Hi guys, newbie here… on the subject of solvent traps, has anyone “utilized” any of them?

MOD EDIT: Form 1’d solvent trap style suppressors are fine to discuss. Anyone discussing solvent traps, outside of the law, will have their comments removed and face sanctions. This does not mean you can’t discuss how stupid the ATF is being right now (see my above comment) but don’t be passing along illegal instructions. Springfield is a firearms mfg and importer and CAN NOT support the use of felonious parts.
Also to @Bama2A the proper place to ask suppressor questions is in the Gear section. Armed with Knowledge is for 2A discussions.

Thank you for this… I will be more mindful of this sort of thing. Great start for the new guy, huh? I will make myself more familiar with the different sections and rules for each. Thank you for the correction and I apologize for the inappropriate post.

I wouldn't sweat it. It's a much better start than the guy a couple days ago who was basically advocating killing intruders and stuffing their body in a dumpster or something. Got himself insta-banned. :)

I have several Form 1 suppressors approved by the ATF.
It is a request to build and you have to state all sorts of definitions, length, type, etc.
ATF even has a mfg drop down box to choose from that are pre approved by ATF.

I’ll just say I’m confused by their ruling and I’ve been thru the system a lot. Within their rules and guidelines.

Very puzzling.

Guess it pertains to buying parts before and not after approval, but still. Confusing as heck

First, Welcome to the Forum. I should’ve said that at the top (pre-coffee ya know). We’re happy you’re here and look forward to your questions/posts.

I wasn’t trying to ding on you specifically. But Alphas are watched more closely as we get our fair share of instigators that come in only to flame or try to get someone to say something stupid.
Not accusing you of that at all, solvent traps are just a hot button.

And the redirect to Gear is just my job. But we go off topic ALL the time. Ask someone in here about their chicken issues 😅 🐓🐓🐓🐓

Seriously, no problem at all! I am not afraid of or offended by being corrected. I’m not only new to this forum, but forums in general. Keep me in line!!
