Full Knee Replacement Surgery

It’s been a while since you posted this, around 18 months, right? I was curious how you’re feeling now and whether the recovery ended up going in the right direction. Hopefully you didn’t need those weak painkillers anymore.

I had a similar experience and actually had to get a second opinion at Skyline Orthopedics to finally get back on my feet, because the whole recovery process was driving me crazy.

If that pain is still bothering you after all this time, it might be worth getting it checked again.

First, thank you for reaching out. Honestly, if you were to ask 20 people how they were feeling post operatively you would get 20 different answers. I my case I'm 1-1/2 years out and I'm not satisfied with the outcome. In fact, I went back under the knife this past February to have the knee scoped for latent scar tissue build-up. While I was under the surgeon also made an incision to relieve the peroneal nerve that was supposedly an issue that was missed at the time of the initial surgery. Now I'm experiencing numbness and a pins and needles feeling in the foot.
I have expressed my displeasure to the doctor on follow-up visits but to no avail. He simply dismisses the why and how's when I tried to express my feelings from the patient's point of view.
So, many others I have come across that have had TKR have nothing but great things to say...I'm the minority here.
Funny, this doctor had offered on multiple visits for me to seek out a second opinion and I turned it down. I never understood why he would blatantly want me to do this. From all accounts I was under the impression I was in good hands. This surgeon was/is supposed to be the go-to senior orthopedic fellow when it comes to anything joint related.

I am 11 months post op with the left knee, done by a highly rated surgeon at Andrews Institute who has done thousands of knee replacements. He and his staff were highly professional and I have nothing but good things to say about the doc and his team.

The first couple of months post surgery were the most miserable experience of my lifetime. I stuck to Ibuprophen and Tylenol after two weeks to avoid the Oxyc
Contin habit. The physical therapists are angels who helped my recovery immensely. At 6 weeks I could not get more than 70° flexion so the doc put me out for 5 mins and forced it to bend. I got immediate relief and within a couple weeks I had 130° flexion on my own. I still get a bit of swelling occasionally but was told to expect that. A bit of ice calms it down but it is not a daily thing. I see the doc in a couple weeks for a one year follow up.

The other knee is vexing me but not as bad as the left. The left knee outcome has been as good as I could have expected in terms of improved mobility. I have said i will not do the other knee due to the misery of the first but have learned to never say never. I am not running and am not climbing mountains, and if the course of fire involves prone or kneeling, I will remain standing. But at my age I think my mobility is acceptable.

I'll never have the replacement for this reason. I've had a stroke which affected my right side and balance, it would be like putting new tires on a broken, junkyard rust bucket. I use a scooter for long forays like gun shows and the occasional trips to the grocery store, and a cane to get around short walks to the Drs office. I see no reason to go through the paln and aggravation of more surgeries.

Get that 2nd and maybe a 3rd opinion. As I probably said earlier, my right knee has been replaced 5 times. Two to defective parts, two to doctor screw-up and one that has worked for 10 years now. Also had my right hip replaced twice within three months last year. Doctors screw up all the time and we are the victims. You need to be proactive!! MBTW, forget a medical malpractice suit. No doctor will testify against another…I found that out. Get yourself better! That is an order!

Wow. Sorry to hear about all the bad experiences. I have had total knee replacement surgery on both knees, and am very happy with the results. I had very successful results and recovery. The worst recovery I have ever had was for my back surgery. I would rather go through another knee replacement surgery than have to go through another back surgery any day. And that is what I have to do. I still have one more back surgery to do, and then that is it for the back. I'm not looking forward to that recovery again. Again, sorry for the bad results on your knees.

Personally, back surgery scares me. Wife has had four of them with no positive results. Take knee problems any, and every, day. At 81, I currently have had more parts replaced than the average bear, with probably more to go.
