Full length guiderods

I’ve installed them on my other 1911’s and they never changed the performance, not one bit. I just like them. What can I say I’m 73 and I just like what I like. 😊😊. But, the reason for the post is the Springfield CC model has an aluminum frame and my concern is a solid steel rod slamming back against the softer metal frame is that going to cause excessive wear? Steel against steel is one thing steel against aluminum that’s a different story.

K. I just wondered what the motivation for the swap is. Sorry for answering a question with another question. "Just because I like it/prefer it" is a valid reason, and one for which all expectations will be easily met ;) !

As to your concern about the possibility of the steel base of the rod battering your aluminum frame: It's a non-issue. There are plenty of factory guns with aluminum frames running steel or stainless steel recoil guide rods. If one thinks a moment about how the auto pistol mechanism works, you'll realize that the recoil/action spring is captured under tension at all times. The action spring's tension will prevent the base of the recoil rod from coming out of its "seat" and then returning to batter the frame. You should be good to go.

The setup of the recoil spring / guide rod is, I think, very much a personal preference thing in the 1911 world. My own preference is for a GI style guide rod/spring setup. I want my 1911s to have maximum ease to field strip without the use of a tool nor an "extra hand." A related preference is how tight or loose the barrel bushing is fitted to the slide. Some want the bushing tight enough that a bushing wrench is required. I like mine to be loose enough that I don't need a wrench to turn it for takedown/reassembly, but not "rattletrap" loose.

Well, the factory guide rod is steel, so it really shouldn’t matter with the full length guide rod

A full length guide rod in a 9mm 1911can add a bit of weight and make the slide reciprocate a bit smoother, but half the time I think it’s more of a placebo effect. They make a difference in competition guns and 2011s. The FLGR can be a pain when you take the gun down. It wont hurt to try one, but I bet you go back to a Govt recoil rod.

I've had three 1911s with FLGRs, the first kept its because I didn't know any better; the second (a Springfield TRP)got its replaced with the original JMB recoil system; and last, a Rock Island in 10mm, it has a bushingless bull barrel, so it stays.

I figure if John Moses didn't think it was necessary, then it don't need it.

But I a bit of a simpleton originalist.....
