So Wednesday I hit the range with the new CZ Shadow 2 Carry to make sure everything functioned correctly. No surprise, it did!
More detail on that event - https://www.thearmorylife.com/forum/threads/ngd-range-day-cz-shadow-2-carry.22864/#post-390523
Thursday I affixed a Holosun EPS-Carry (flush, no plate required), using Cajun Gun Works screws, locktite preapplied. Torqued to 15 in lbs per Holosun. Could find no instructions from CZ, like I did from FN, which had a way different instruction for mounting an optic on my Reflex MRD compared to Holosun stating 15 in lbs. (FN was 6-8 in-lbs, which seems to be holding)
Anyway, today, Friday, back to the range to zero in the EPS-Carry on the Shadow 2 Carry. As I will use 124g HST when/if I carry it, I took a box of that, along with a 100 box of 124g American Eagle FMJ.
So as not to lose this comment for those that don’t read to the end, when all was said and done, I noticed that I could not line up dot (after I got it where I wanted it) with the front sight when BUIS are aligned. Other guns, this has always been what I’ve seen (dot perfectly aligned on front sight when BUIS aligned). Makes me wonder if front or rear iron sights are off a bit? I don’t wonder enough to measure them though, at least not today. EPS-Carry works just fine! And my shooting on Wednesday with just the irons was certainly solid enough to get the job done.
Thought I’d try something different and zero at 10 yds. Finding easy math to convert 1 MOA from 100yds to 10 yds didn’t hurt either
. This was also first time I’ve tried a 6 MOA dot. Seemed to be more forgiving to my lifelong astigmatism.
Using the HST to zero, first five rounds. Don’t suppose anyone would believe I created this pattern on purpose? This is where the WTH in the title comes from, as in “What the hell”? I’m sure I tightened that optic to spec!
Sure enough, optic tightened down like the Seaview in “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea”! After some optic adjustment for an inch higher (based on the three low hits). Sent the target back out to 10 yds and tried 5 more. MUCH better, but nothing I could make adjustments from
.
So 10 more rounds it is! Hmmm…think I’ll leave the optic adjustments alone!
Still at 10 yds, 5 each at #2, then #1. That was the plan anyway. Was only 4 rounds left in gun for #1
. Apparently still can’t count!
Last 5 of the HST (wanted to save 15 rounds for home defense/carry). Moved it out to 15 yds and attacked #4. Geesh I have a lot of sight movement trying to hold steady. I distinctly remember somewhere in the distant past a voice yelling about a sight moving in a figure 8 motion and try to fire on center. Need some more focus on that for sure!
Enough of the 10 yds. Set up my favorite target “Tactical Dude” to run my favorite drill.
Quick reminder:
3 yds, 5 shots left shoulder, 5 shots right shoulder, slow fire
5 yds, 10 shots center, fast fire
7 yds, 10 shots center, fast fire
15 yards, 5 shots center, slow fire
Back to 3 yds, finish with 5 strings of 2 to the center, one to head, fast fire.
Total 50, American Eagle 124g FMJ (with same FPS as HST used earlier - 1150)
No idea why my left shoulder group is ALWAYS so much tighter than right shoulder group, especially slow fire. It’s been that way as long as I’ve been shooting this drill
. I’ll take that nose group though from the five 2-1 strings! Nice way to finish a drill.
Had 50 more rounds of American Eagle to shoot, so just used the same target to rerun the same drill. Similar results. So here is how it looks after 100 rounds. All in all, a good day! And, while I didn’t get in any weak hand or 1h strong side practice in, those are things I’ll be looking forward to in the future.
