G.I. Ingenuity: M1 Garands Firing Mortar Shells

Like most of the Armory articles, I found this to be very interesting. American Ingenuity at its best. We did make that!
They called them grenade launchers back then. Ive seen them fired using blanks.
M79 is way more accurate.
While I agree and the 203 was better than the 79, they didn't have either and did the best they could with what they had. Field Expedience is the mother of all creations in war.

The Soldier holding the M1 with the mortar shell on it is my uncle Walter Kyle. He was in the 101st. The mortar shell idea was his and the Army awarded him, IIRC, $50.00 for the idea. During a battle they ran out of the rifle grenades. Uncle Walter figured out how to mount the mortar rounds which went a long way to helping their ultimate battlefield success. He survived to War without earning a Purple Heart.
After the War, he, my uncle Wesley (37th ID, WW2) and my father Evert (24th ID, Korean War) ran a logging company in far Northern California.

Like slapping a Meatballs and Beans C rat can on the feed tray of an M60 MG to improve the ammo feed. Of course you have to eat the Meatballs and beans before you put it on.

There is a description of this adaptation in Charles B. MacDonald’s classic “Company Commander.” He referred to these as “foxhole mortars.”
