Garmin inReach Mini 2 Satellite Communicator Review

This seems like cheap insurance on the once in a lifetime Elk hunt you finally got drawn for. Seems like the average age on this forum is "Experienced" and having concrete comms in the back country makes this a must have. Medical emergency, lost, you name it. Out of cell service is common, but if you are out of satellite service, man you are WAY off in the back country!

I bought the full size Garmin In Reach for a combo Honeymoon/Lion Hunt. We knew wed be out of Cell Phone range and wanted to be able to stay in touch with the kids, since we were going to be gone for 30 days. The Full Size model allows you to send TEXT messages to the people you have on your list. It also lets them track you so they know where you are. We thought the kids (12 and 15) would like that, Turns out they could care less, they were being spoiled by their grandparents. PLUS of course send a HELP signal
The downside of the texting is the key pad is set up ABCDEFG instead of like a normal keypad (ASDF JKL;) so it make texting slow. The Garmin is way cheaper but I would rather have spent the $$$$ on a SAT PHONE.

I think the MINI is just "Hey Im here Send HELP" which is still kinda cool but if thats all you want buy the Brietling watch with the Emergency Beacon at least then youll have something you can use after the trip
