Tips to Get Out of Your Hotel Safely

Carry a small light. Many years ago I was working in Atlanta, staying in a fairly high line hotel. One day I started down the stairs (I was in a hurry and the elevator was taking too long to get to my floor) I started down the 4 stories when the power went out-stairwell went black (emergency lighting did NOT come on). Ok. I’m an old firefighter-not scared of the dark. Carefully made my way downstairs. Wasn’t exactly sure what floor I was at so figured I’d just follow the stairs all the way down. Ran out of stairs and went feeling around for a door. Found one and it was locked. What the hell? Went around again thinking I’d missed the exit. Nope. One door only and it’s locked. Went back up one floor, found a door and opened it. I was on the ground floor at the far side of the lobby. Afterwards had a serious discussion with the hotel manager concerning lack of operating emergency lighting in the stairwells, and that there was no physical barrier to prevent inadvertent travel to the basement (below level of egress). As a fire protection engineer I was able to give him chapter and verse from NFPA 101 where these are REQUIRED. I also advised Atlanta FD that they might want to take a look. After that I always carried a small flashlight when traveling.
