Gun Estate

An acquaintance's father in law passed and he is asking for advice on what to do with the guns. The widow wants to sell some of them but they know little about guns or values. I told him I would give my best advice but he should be cautious about bargain hunters taking advantage. I will probably look them over next week.

My best friend passed away some years back. He had a large gun collection and I took care of it for his wife. I carefully inspected, researched and priced each of them. Then we got some tables at a gun show and sold a lot of them.
It was a lot of work and took several months. But I'm glad I made sure she got fair value for every one of them.

You are correct. The vultures will be coming out of the woodwork trying to scoop up a bargain, while cheating the family. Don't sell anything until you've done the research.

It helps if he kept good records. If you know what he spent on them, you can sell them quickly a little below current market, but still at a considerable profit.

Several years ago wife’s friends husband died. We were talking to her at Church and she mentioned her lawyer had offered her $1000 for Dave’s six guns. I told her Claudia that’s nuts. I’ll give you $1200 right now without even seeing them. Let me see what I can do for you. I went and looked them over. There was an Anschultz 22, an M1 Carbine, and old Winchester 06 .22, a 16 gauge Model 12, a 52 Winchester .22 and an old Colt .38 revolver. I took them to a local shop I’d done business with for several years and explained the situation. He bought the lot for $3500 and Claudia got a receipt showing what the dealer paid her for each one. And her “friend” the lawyer was generously offering her $1000 😏. Lots of folks willing to take advantage of a widow lady

I have clients that ask me all the time what to do. I suggest that they make a list, and refer to them in their will.

A good friend/client once told me he was afraid that when he passed, his wife would sell his guns for what he told her he paid for them. Let that sink in! 🤣
I think we all have probably done that on several acquisitions over the years.
