Ha! Kuna at Range Ya! - 3 Mar 26

Lab4Us

Professional
Another week, another day of fundamentals practice. Today it was time for the Kuna to get broken in (still no word on suppressor, awaiting ATF). Nothing special, 100 rounds of Winchester 124g NATO FMJ @ 1200 fps, 40 rounds of American Eagle FMJ @ 1150 FPS, and 60 rounds of Federal HST 124g @ 1150 FPS. Still awaiting subsonic ammo to arrive, so that will have to wait.

All shots fired with brace extended and 2H standing using a hand stop. No bench rest…and no bipod :ROFLMAO: !

First up was zeroing the Holosun AEMS. Didn’t really know best place to mount it so chose center. Also made a really stupid decision and decided to try gold - WORST flare for my astigmatism of a color (red, green, gold). Should have stuck with green or red OR the AEMS is just not up to standards like the EOTECH. Could also be where it’s mounted, but I tried moving my eye closer and further and still had a significant flare no matter what. I finally ended up just using the center dot and lining it up with my aiming eye which got me through. Not very effective use of an AEMS type sight, but what’s a guy to do?

Sent target out to 15 for first 5 rounds, a bit left, 1/4 turn to the right. 5 more rounds, still a bit to the left, another 1/4 to the right. At this time I moved back to 10 yards (mainly because of way I had to aim to avoid massive flare), and then put 65 more rounds into target. I think
I liked the results.

Then I put 75 more rounds into the bottom bullseye. The high ones were back at 15 yds and instead of moving zero, just moved target back the 10 yds. The one low one was because I miscounted magazine rounds and thought I was empty. Pulled trigger to confirm as didn’t feel bolt, but alas there was one left. At least I got close without even aiming!

Y’all know what comes next! Tactical Dude has been recalled!

3 yds - 5 rounds each shoulder, slow fire. Taught me a quick holdover lesson I hadn’t even thought about.
5 yds - 10 rounds center rapid fire
7 yds - 10 rounds center rapid fire
15 yds - 5 rounds center, slow fire
3 yards - 5 strings of 2 to center and 1 to head

I adjusted my aiming points at each stage after seeing the low POI at 3 yards. This is the 3 yds shoulder and 5 yds center.

This target adds the 10 rounds at 7 yards.

This target adds the 5 slow fire at 15 yards. Definitely aimed low based on lower bullseye target while zeroing.

IMG_5210.jpeg

And finally, the five strings at 3 yds, 2 to center, 1 to head. Aimed at chin for center shots (should have aimed a bit lower) and top of white skull for head shots.

I was really surprised how easy the Kuna was to shoot and there were zero hiccups with today’s ammo. I found the hand stop very effective to get same exact grip every time which seemed to assist with accuracy. To say I had a blast shooting it would be an understatement.

About the only concern I have is the optic. Not sure it it’s too tall (there is a low mount in box), if it’s just cheap so it flares worse than other sights, or if the gold color just won’t work for me, or if I just have it mounted in the wrong spot on the rail. Alternatively, I’m also not sure if a regular RDS wouldn’t work better for me on a short pistol (6” barrel). Always willing to listen to suggestions for improvement.

Hi @Lab4Us,

The Tactical Dude abides! I've missed that guy. Wow, impressive the way you can get your holes touching. Nice shooting. That Kuna sure looks like fun. I'm trying to make up my mind between that and a short (10") Saint AR in 9mm. It will be a while, I just picked up a new Henry in .357. I gotta save up some more gig money. ;)

Anyway, nice day at the range! Thanks for sharing your fun. Sorry I can't help with your optic. I've got a couple of cheap ones to put on a couple of my rifles. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

The height over bore matters at closer distance more than anything. If you zeroed the sight at 50yds it will start to shoot lower the less yards you shoot under 50yds or whatever the zero is. If you walked up to a cardboard target and put the zeroed dot on the bullseye and shot youll see that the bullet will impact lower then your dot.

I use a Burris Fast Fire E green dot on my Kuna which is low profile and sits low on the rail and I really like it. Pulling the Kuna to my face the sight falls right in line naturally without having to find the perfect position to aqiuire the dot. I did have to but an aftermarket ACRO to 1913/pic rail mount to mount the sight on my Kuna.

If I may, where on the rail did you mount the RDS?

Please spend some extra $$ on proper underarm protection!!
That man suffers from constant failure of deodorant to protect.
