HELP Newby Cleaning Lubing 45 mil-spec for 1st time

What are you experts using to clean and remove the film from a brand-new gun??? Then which grease to use for lubing, I havent done this before??? Putting gun oil in the barrel is my norm, what else is there to making my guns ready??? I dont want to get the wrong gun grease so what do you guys and gals use in yours??? Please advise, all opinions are welcome... I do have hoppes cleaner and remington gun oil...
 
You're going to find everyone uses something different and all of the oils will work, some cost more than others and some stink like all get out. i use Mobil1 to lube everything from muzzloaders to machine guns. it doesn't get rank and doesn't sling off too much. been using it for years. it's a lot cheaper than most gun oils. i do use rem oil to wipe the outside with and Mobil1 is too thick. you will need to oil the slide where it travels on the grip modul. just apply some in the grooves on the slide and work it a few times when you connect the two. now someone will come along and tell you only idiots use car oils on guns and give you there choice. there really is no wrong oil, just make sure it is lubricated well. I don't use grease for one reason and i won't get into that on this post but nothing wrong with it and i'm sure it has improved tremendously since i used it last.

i use Hoppe's 9 for cleaning, and Lucas Extreme duty for lube....(a synthetic oil)

i did use a grease on my Sig 1911 that they recommend grease.

but to me that's not needed.

my expensive Dan Wessons say to use synthetic oil as well, not grease.

i also run a wet patch thru the barrel, and leave it there, since i store my guns in the basement, no issues, and i do not wipe it out before firing.
 
I use Lucas Oil Extreme Duty CLP to clean all my guns, does a great job, I don’t use any bore cleaners unless build up is bad, then again I use Lucas Oil Bore Cleaner, then to lube, again I use Lucas Extreme Duty Gun Oil, yea, I like the Lucas Oil products, they always work great for me, not into using any grease on any of my semi auto’s.

for me, its like a drop on the patch, run thru the barrel.....not sopping wet.

been doing this since i started, to prevent rust, being stored in the basement..even with a dehumidifier in the summer.
 
I use Wilson Combat Grease for carry guns, as the oil transfers to clothing easier on an inside the waistband holster, about the only way I can hide a 1911. Obviously, oily clothes are to be avoided. I have used it for decades. I like the syringe applicator. I also see that MidwayUSA no longer carries it, now going to Wilson Combat Ultima II grease with a different applicator. I also use Mil-Comm TW25B gun grease. Several friends of mine that served in the Sandbox swear by Mil-Comm I have used it to complete satisfaction under considerably less strenuous conditions.
 
I run my EDC dry but clean frequently. This greatly reduces lint attraction. Stored firearms are cleaned with Hoppes #9 and then wiped down with a silicone impregnated cloth. I'd probably look at different options if I lived somewhere that had high humidity or dampness. As it stands now, my firearms and ammunition are stored in a humidity and temperature controlled room.

Below is a pic of my current products I use on my 1911/2011 handguns, all SAO handguns. I shoot about 500 rounds (between one or two guns) not each gun, every weekend. I clean and lube after every range trip.
I like the Break through military grade solvent for cleaning barrels and compensators, I use the Lucas gun cleaner spray on raw stainless barrels and stainless guide rod, recoil springs ans reverse plugs. Lucas Extreme Duty oil on all other DLC and Cerakoted areas.
I coat the inside of compensators with Slip 2000 EWL30 before each range trip, makes carbon clean up a breeze on comped pistols.
As mentioned before, do not over lube the bore of your guns, Atlas Gunworks actually suggest that the best way to clean the bore is with a bullet.
One last thing, "Only idiots lube their guns with motor oil" LOL, could not resist.

Lamp, I assume by .45 mil-spec you mean a 1911, right ?
The tolerances on these can vary (and corresponds to the price 😉), and that kinda/sorta influences the choice between grease or oil. Tighter tolerances , I’d go with oil only. Just my opinion.
Cleaning? As stated above, don’t leave a lot of oil in the barrel. Ought to be very nearly dry. Clean, but dry.
Far as products: yeah, they all work. I’m a fan of Ballistol (worlds first CLP), Clenzoil (first American CLP) and Tetra.
But Hoppe’s, Lucas Extreme duty, Shooters Choice, etc are all tried & true…
Gunfighter is a newer brand that seems to work well. Breakthrough Technologies is also a newer option I’ve used.

I love Ballistol, but my wife does not! Sooooo……

I actually like Eezox, it’s a dry lubricant and works really well, but I’ve heard it’s pretty toxic - even though the manufacturer claims it is not - but when I use it my throat goes funny. Maybe I should try it on the rocks!

You bring up a good point Simon…
Ballistol is by far the safest from what I can tell. The ones that are solvent-based are pretty toxic..

I've never had a problem with an order. It's the only thing I've used on all my units for the last five years. But I know they have had some supply issues at times. Seems they have a handle on it now.
