Helping Your Non-gun Friends to Choose a First Concealed Carry Handgun

This job recently got a whole lot easier in my area. The selection of handguns at my local big-box stores have gotten so low that new buyers only have 3-4 options to choose from. At Academy last week, a new buyer could pick from (1) XDs 45 Mod.2; (2) S&W Shield in .40 S&W; (3) Taurus TX22; or (4) assorted Heritage single action revolvers. It's safe to say that the XDs would be my recommendation.

I usually break it down to two categories. People who are somewhat mechanically inclined or people who aren't. Unless it's a woman. I very rarely recommend revolvers for carry guns. And I always offer up some range time with me and my pistols to help them decide.

I take them shooting let them shoot a few different calibers semi auto and revolver. That usually works good.
I've turned a few opposed to guns folk, by the end of the day the grin was from ear to ear on them.
