I do agree departments should allow individual firearms but they also get a “bulk” deal or have a few armors to service a fleet. As a civilian shooter we have a choice of weapons that we like in situations.

It really wouldn’t be a hard thing tj deal with.

Like “back in the day” they often “allowed” fokks if they met a higher bar on firearms profeciency (like way higher than minimum standards) to carry magnum rounds instead of 38’s or whatever brand of quality firearm or even gasp a cocked and locked 1911 (FBI allowed SWAT members to carry 1911’s as regular duty guns)


But in the name of uniformity, bidding (or like Indjana State Oilice if the Superintended likes SIGs and a retired trooper works for SIG yjen hih are gonna get a Sig) or the no cop left behind lowering standards we are all getting dumber LOL

There is a wide range of training emphasis in different departments, and a range of interest within each department. At my PD, the last 5 chiefs were all SWAT guys so there was quite a lot of understanding of training needs. I worked with officers and agents who were serious gunslingers and competition shooters, and some who struggle to pass annual qualifications. But most were at least competent.

I can stand a good department with competition shooters and gun slingers. One of the MCL detachments is the CPD and they hold 2 competitions each year at a VFW. What scares me is the ones that struggle with qualifying. I know it’s not easy at times to find the time with “life” going on to bring the skills up.

As far as use as like in practice it can vary for example as far as agency required training NYPD had 2 quals a year and had around the often quoted 19% hit rate. LAPD shoots one wual every month and has around a 66-70% hit rate
Bakersfield CA area required e wry one to shoot the Bakersfield Qual every 2 weeks (a 10 shot proficiency drill they had to shoot above 80 or drive a feat until they passed) and they had an 85% hit rate

Others are usually annually other than Special teams are usually more. At least monthly with that.


No what individual officers do is hard to teack but would be something along that 10/80/10 breakdown but slightly more than the top 10% probably practice. Some out of the 80% that are up towards the top 10 no sought practice on their own or shoot matches whatever.

Back in the day it was a huge deal in the summer to shoot PPC matches all over on Saturdays and agemcies have out profeciency ammo like candy for those that did. But like everything whem cuts get made training stuff is usually the first to go. So it isn’t what it was in the late 1980’s early 1990’s.

All that said average FIP against average gun owner the cop will perform better.
The gun enthusiast that actually practiced and take a class or 2 will out perform the average cop and probably hang with and beat some of the top 10% of LE.


No as far as LE using theor guns in duty shootings it’s going tj fluctuate but the FBI Spexial agents have probably 10-20 shootings a year. HRT probably close to that jn their realm.

Border Patrol use to have the most shootings

Indianapolis Metropolitan PD has around 20-25 shootings a year. (A link to their afteraction channels below with well out together after actions some will find interesting)

I know in this time of our lives it cannot be easy to wear the uniform. I know some people’s heart is the right place but can’t meet the standards. There’s so much I can say about our government spending money on other stuff besides where it needs to be.

I’ll be honest and say an Illinois state trooper was the one that helped me go for my concealed carry. I did eventually get it a year ago. I’m not knocking when I ask “How many do actually go practice?” I’m asking because I don’t see it from a snow flake standpoint.

I know in this time of our lives it cannot be easy to wear the uniform. I know some people’s heart is the right place but can’t meet the standards. There’s so much I can say about our government spending money on other stuff besides where it needs to be.

The old saying goes- life is a journey, not a destination. I know I ain’t perfect but I’m perfectly me. Yes life is “those” conversations that make the journey happen. It took hard dark times to enjoy what is called life. I know I ain’t the best conversation person out there but I will ask those questions.

I think this conversation got deeper than I expected but I think I got something out of it.
