This article checks serveral boxes, especially the "Unpredicatable Terrain" that I experienced a couple weeks ago in my last hike up in the hills.

When in the deep outdoors, we tend to look ahead and see all of nature’s wonders in front of us. However, this may not always be a good thing.

Dangers can lurk below at ground level, and with every step you may put yourself at risk. Terrain, tiny pests, predatory animals, and more can threaten the safety of your hiking trip.

Here’s what to notice, prepare for, and avoid to make your next adventure safe when there’s danger with every step.

I was hiking in an area of low hills between Laramie & Cheyenne years ago crossing a low spot. Stepped forward and the ground was 'bouncy.' Backed up a step and putting your ear to the ground you could hear water running under the ground.

These things have gotten more of my attention as I’ve gotten older. Personal experiences as well as friends show you just what can happen. Surviving the initial experience goes a long way towards avoiding a second event when you’re too old and slow or by yourself.

Sound advice here. Where I grew up, almost all the flora and fauna encountered wants to stick you, bite you, or sting you. One has not lived until you've spent weeks pulling festering spikes out of your buttocks after seating yourself on a small boulder with a tiny cactus growing from a crack right where you chose to sit (without looking closely before sitting).
