How do you cycle your carry ammo?

I often laugh when someone says they clean their EDC once a month to remove dust and lent but never mention magazines or ammo, shoot that +p sh.t, it will get your heart pumping and you will remember why you carry it.

Hi,

Carry ammo I'll shoot once a year. Though every range trip, around once a month, I empty carry mags for range ammo but will shoot maybe 5-6 rounds of the carry ammo for the obvious reasons.

Welcome to the forum! :D

I may have mentioned earlier in the thread, a couple times a year I will shoot a mag of my Gold Dot 124 grain in a training class. Most of my ball ammo is 124 also, no +P. That way there is little difference between practice and emergency usage, in theory. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

I wish I had that problem. Personally I rotate at the range like I rotate my EDC. Every firearm I own is a tad different and it’s therapeutic to clean after a range session. Yes I’m weird.

For the semi crowd: I try to make it a point to cycle the CARRY ammo in my EDC every 2-4 weeks (chambered round goes to the bottom of the mag), rinse & repeat, until all of the rounds have spent at least 2 weeks in the chamber. Then I shoot them off at the range and load up with fresh EDC ammo. It's not set in stone, and if the rounds look good I'll extend the practice when needed (or shorten it).

I know things are going to be a lot different for revolver users (if you ever cycle your ammo at all) but I wanted to see who does things differently.
I don’t rotate the rounds anymore. Instead every couple weeks or so I take my digital calipers and check OAL of the round I have been chambering. As long as it’s the same as ammo I have sitting in the box of federal HST, I know I’m good. The biggest concern with repeatedly chambering the same round of course being over compressing the projectile into the casing from repeated feeding on the feed ramps. Whenever I chamber a round at home I don’t drop the slide release, I ride the slide forward which I would imagine reduces the likelihood of over compression.

However, anytime I install new parts or need to remove my red dot for some reason, I do take the time to pick up another box of HST. I’ll use the rounds from my carry mag to BZO the red dot and reliability check the set up. I’ll then top off my carry mags with fresh HST.

Your method is perfectly reliable and proactive in preventing the over compression from occurring.
