How to Handle Squib Loads and Hangfires

A squib load/round is one whose propelling energy is less than necessary to push the projectile out of the firearm. This results in your handgun bullet being lodged somewhere between the chamber and the muzzle-a condition that could cause you major problems if you keep shooting. Firing another round behind the squib might result in that following round- and the gases propelling it-getting stuck behind the lodged bullet. Consequences range from a mortally damaged handgun to a very seriously injured shooter.

I've seen one squib and it was a factory remanufactured load. In my first Makarov. A Russian .380. I noticed it and returned to the shop where I bought the ammo and made them remove the projectile and give me a box of new factory ammo. I have never shot a reload in a semi- auto since.

I've never heard of much less seen a hangfire.

Good info Talyn.
