Hunt and Capture of German Submarine U-505

Our sixth grade class took a field trip to Chicago in 1958 to the Science & Industry Museum and I toured the U-505. It was outside the museum at that time. The indoor venue looks terrific. I can see Indiana Jones walking thru the exhibit looking for the Arc. Surprisingly at that time our class toured the museum unsupervised. The only rule we had was be on the school bus when it left for home. Times have changed.

I was just telling my wife I want to visit this IF we ever get forced to go to Chicago ... had a biz conference that just got cancelled there (can't say I'm sorry).

As a full-time, post-retirement 2A activist I pray we succeed in bringing ALL 50 STATES under full Constitutional carry before the U-505's 100th birthday!

When a state considers more anit-2A measures, I try to find a way to send a message to their legislators and Tourism departments that I will not visit their state and I will do all I can to influence my associations to avoid them as well.
 
Admiral Vincent T Gallery wrote several humorous books about the Navy (Stand By-y-y to Start Engines, Cap'n Fatso are two) as well as a non-fiction about the capture of U-505. As I recall, he says the humor books were "fiction" to protect the guilty ... lol.
ALL were enjoyable reads ~~ IF you can find them still.

Pretty cool display.

Looks like the interior isn't open.

I went to the museum of Science and Industry when they hauled into Chicago. I remember they cut two holes in the side and you could walk through it. Back then you could still smell the crew’s BO lol. Kinda dates me as that was a long time ago.

I’ve been in one WW2 US sub-the 505 is a LOT smaller inside (and the US subs are tiny). Interestingly the German subs could dive a lot deeper than ours could. US subs did to Japan what German subs tried to do to Great Britain. Took real guts to be in one of those things.
