I have a question.

We have a friend that wants to sell a few of her late husbands gun to make some extra money to repair her vehicle that was involved in an accident and she has asked me to.put a value on them. One is a Winchester model 70, which is pretty straightforward except it's chambered for 300 Weatherby Magnum. My 36th edition of the Standard Catalog of Firearms doesn't list one in that clambering. I haven't seen the actual gun and only pictures so I don't know if its pretty 64 or post 64 but with a G serial number prefix I assume post. Does anyone have any input?

Nice....I had the exact same rifle once.

That M70 is not a pre-64, which is really only a big deal to a collector, not a shooter or hunter.
The "pre-64" was only chambered in 270, 30-06, 300 Savage (rare!), 308 and 7x57, from all the accounts I have read.

I'll send her a copy of what the book says and tell her $200 for the scope. Seems reasonable. I don't need it as I have one just like it in 300 Win. Mag. A 03-A3 is on the list so I will send a copy of what the book says and make an offer on that one. I have one but it's not original. Someone put

target sights on it. Cool rifle but not original.

Don’t know when the 70 was made in .300 Bee. Find out and go from there. As to scope value…check EBay, lots of scopes on there.

Could be but the barrel stamp looks factory and @Anchorite said he once had the same rifle so I assume it was in the same chambering.

Mauser-type claw extractors (controlled feed), spring-loaded hooks (push feed)

Just have her take the thing to a real LGS and have then figure it out. It shouldn't be this difficult.

Yes, mine was a 300 Wby. In hindsight, I do miss that rifle.

I have one I bought from a co-worker many years ago, but in 300 Win Mag with, it looks like, the same Redfield scope.

That's my understanding as well.

So look at the bolt and you will know if is pre or post 64.

The 300 Weatherby Magnum caliber appears to be rare for the rifle so that may add to it's value.
