I watched a YouTube video about...

Captain O

Master Class
The .22 WRMF, the .32 ACP and the .380 ACP in "pocket automatics".

The upshot from the short video was...

  1. .22 Magnum: Isn't dependable enough to use as a "last ditch" backup gun for SD. (Rimfires can't be relied upon 100% of the time. Not good.) Clothing can inhibit penetration and any failure to fire at a crucial moment can result in a negative outcome. Short barrel of pocket pistol can reduce velocity/penetration.
  2. .32 ACP/7.65 Browning: Ignore the "hollow point" canard. Use the hottest FMJ the pistol can tolerate. (Penetration is your strongest ally.) The centerfire attribute is a good one. (Hint: It goes bang every time and has been doing it for 117 years.)
  3. .380ACP/9mm Browning/Kurz: Use the heaviest bullet to achieve the deepest penetration possible. Hollow point ammunition may, or may not, expand. Again, penetration is a good bet. You can't always rely of the shorter 9mm to penetrate adequately and expand. (You can have one, or the other, but not both.)
This is the best advice that I have found anywhere, backed by empirical/verifiable data. I have no reason to doubt it.

This is why I prefer to carry a minimum of a 3.5" barrel when it comes to either the .380 or the .32. My health and life depend on it.

Sort of funny, these caliber debates remind me of “that one tome ant band camp” stories. And sorry most channels are misguided. Several have dismissed the 9mm 147 G2 Gold Dot because they test one round yet here is the Border Patrol LAPD and Navy Seals dirt napping bad guys with it so maybe they should watch some guy in a funny bay on YouTube

That said I know 2 guys that dirt napped felons with 45 ACP’s and now routinely carry snub 22 mag. And out of a snub give the same or similar ballistics of an22 LR out of a rifle which is Almost always fatal

And while 380 isn’t a big item where I am at a retired NYPD Detective I am friends with and we have been to Revolverfest together the last 3 years (he also had SIrT napped 4 felons) said he has seen a slew of fatalities woth 380.

Point being while sure everyone knows an HST or Gold Dot and the like are preferable IF YOU CAN SHOOT the others less preferable calibers and loadings can and have worked well. IF YOU CAN’T SHOOT that HST isn’t going to make up for that!

This man has the background/experience to back it up.

I am a veteran that worked as an Armed Security Patrol Officer who patrolled the "mean streets" of Portland, OR during the late 90s/early 2000s and had a number of "close calls".

Been there/done that.

"If you can't shoot that HST isn't going to make up for that".

True that, brother. True that.

I have had the living $#it scared out of me when one fool pulled a machete out of the front floorboard of his forest green Ford Taurus at 10:00 pm on December 25th, 2008. (I was at a static "unarmed" post at a Parr Lumber store being built just off Interstate 5 in Battleground, Washington.) I happened to have my 1991 Stainless Steel Charter Arms Bulldog in a shoulder holster. We immediately had a "come to Jesus" meeting while I cuffed him up and called the Clarck County Washington Sherriff's Office. While I stuffed the 3" barreled .44 Special in his face, the idiot claimed he was there to "work on the heavy equipment". (Yeah, right.) I nearly shot the horse's *** for pulling that stunt.

I thank the almighty God we both survived the encounter. The paperwork would have been a royal pain in the ***.

True story.

Carrying a .22 WRFM isn't a bad idea. The revolver can fire again with a quick pull of the trigger. The .22 WMRF self-loading pistol that misfires will constitute a problem. The difficulty is with the "pocket auto" chambered for the "smallbore rimfire Magnum".
