Is a .22LR round plausible for self defense?

My wife has a .22 mini-revolver that fits in her hand. It's about the size if a wallet.

I wouldn't take it big game hunting (I can't find a scope mount for it), but it makes a pretty big bang and a BIG flash.

It's a serious deterrent, if you want to call that a weapon.
If you look around you can find one:

So:

Placing a .22 on the X is definitely no harder than placing a 9mm or .45 on the X; in fact, when it comes to subsequent shots, it’s going to be a lot easier due to low recoil.

I’d much rather have a .22 placed well than a 9mm, etc, placed sloppily, so…yeah, your concept of a 9mm or 10mm just “near that area” needs some rethinking.

Simple fact is—a LOT of people have been stopped by a .22 used in self defense…simply because the vast majority of defensive shooting stops are what are called psychological stops; the psychological shock of being shot ends aggression, even though there wasn’t severe physiological trauma that would instantly physically incapacitate the recipient.

End of the day? Caliber will almost certainly be irrelevant. Having a firearm, having the will to use it and the skill to make rapid hits will matter INFINITELY more than how big the bullets are.
I’m gonna quote myself, here.

Well, paraphrase.

If you need to use a handgun for self defense, caliber will be mostly irrelevant.

What will matter is your will to use it, and your ability to place multiple shots rapidly and accurately…the size of the holes really won’t matter.

multiple holes where they didn’t exist before, not matter the size I think will have an effect.

The one butcher slaughter house where we took our steers and hogs as a kid used a .22LR in a Winchester pump rifle to kill animals for slaughter. I have killed lot of feral hogs in my traps with various calibers, among them .22LR, although 22 magnum seems to work better. But, I believe and always taught my classes that defensive handguns should be center fire. I am comfortable with my .45, thank you.

Again, the .22 is definitely lethal with proper shot placement, however in SD your goal should be to stop the attack, right Now, not inflict a wound that may be fatal an hour from now😏. Ask yourself a question. If a 175 lb black bear was charging you from 7 yards would you want ANY .22 pistol or would you want something with more (a LOT more) power? If you answer isn’t the .22, then ask yourself why you’d consider it’d equate on a 6’3” 220 lb gangbanger with a knife😳. Do what floats your boat, your call, your life. Me? I want something that will solve the problem/stop the attack NOW, regardless of the # of legs the predator has…

Because bears don’t give up with the first hit, even if it’s not lethal, or even damaging—and most people do.

Humans=/=bears.

Getting into the 100 men vs 1 gorilla territory.

Looks like they can easily lift 300+lbs and bite 800 psi.

I’m a tubby 6’ (6’1 with right shoes) and currently 230 and I’m pretty confident a bear will have its yogi way with me 😂

I get what you’re saying, just having a little fun with it. I think for some 22 is their threshold so train to mag dump with on target accuracy 🤷‍♂️

👍. You get the point though. Bear is a bad actor, however a two legged predator, hopped up on God knows what, is also no joke

Get point and can relate-ish. Had 700 pounds crush middle finger and skin hanging off bone on a job site 11 years ago. I jumped up, cussed a bunch and walked around in circles as you do….then got phone called ambulance and lit a cigarette. Adrenaline is an amazing thing

Now i have a little McNugget. Being originally from NJ it’s a speech impediment :)

I used to; and still on occasion, while walking thru the desert where the main concern would be coyotes, carry a .32 Long revolver. Obviously not a ‘killer” round, but in the 60-70s, it was the caliber of choice amount the high-livers in S. L.A. long before the 9mm, and even the .38, the .32 was a round to be reckoned with, followed by the ?32 Short and occasionally a .25 auto. Back then, being perforated by a bullet was not a pleasant think, and could lead to “blood poisoning”. So, a .22 is not far behind, by some accounts, so don’t call it quits if that is all you have…Semper fi

When I worked murders with firearms, most of them were with 22s. Point in general direction of the person you want to shoot, yank the trigger until it goes click. Worked pretty good for them.
Not my first choice but effective

Well, I have been told that the weapons of choice for professional hitmen are .22 at any distance and an ice pick up close.

I always wondered how that poll was conducted.
"Are you a professional hitman? If so would you answer a few questions? For your time we will send you a free Slim Whitman albumo_O"

Well I don't know about any poll, but the guy who told me, well, let's just say he didn't tell me what he did, someone else did. I'm pretty sure he was speaking of his own personal preference.
