Is the S&W 396 Night Guard the Ultimate .44 Special Carry Revolver?

I like it. .44 Special will deal effectively with pretty much anything you’ll run into. (Would want more for big bears and such, but for most of the lower 48 this would do the job). Most of the stuff I burn from my Mags is heavy Special level power.

It's subjective, as to the beholder's concepts & expectations. That said , I'll have to go with ..... No .

IF you concept extends to being close in size to a small frame revolver , then Charter Arms Bulldog , or the slightly larger discontinued Taraus M442 . ( Yeah , they will take work to keep them running, or to slick up enough to be somewhat livable triggers . But if size matters, this is where it's at .) ( I did use to have its sibling , the Taraus M450 in .45LC . )

Meanwhile, there is significant overlap between * Old School enough to worship big bore belly guns * , and * Old School enough to Dress Around the Gun * . This is an L frame and not tiny . I could just as easily step up half a notch , and carry the Terminator.
