This came up in the small VS large gun thread. Kinda like a Light Bulb moment. When you think you cant carry a full size gun consider that its probably the holster. Ive got a box (actually boxes) full of holsters that suck but Ive also got a few that are GREAT. My goto shoulder holster is the Galco Miami Classic with a close fall back to the MASC shoulder rigs, which are clones of the Galco and a tad bit cheaper. They use the mags to balance the weight of the gun. Its ALL Day comfortable. I have a rig for TWO Officer model 1911s worn left and right again ALL Day comfortable.
For belt carry I like the Askins Avenger or just Avenger style. Its a strong side OWB holster with a loop on the holster and a rear loop to pull the gun in close. I wear it a 3:00 or 3:30 with a GOOD belt. For years I carried a 1911, then a M9, then a Sig 226 concealed with two or three spare mags without any thought that it was uncomfortable. When in plain clothes I ran an early "tuckable" holster with a dress shirt and had no need to wear a coat in hot weather.
Speaking of BELTS, a good belt makes the difference between a comfortable carry and a nagging and drooping. DONT buy your belt at Walmart or Tractor Supply and expect it the be a comfortable. GUNBELTS are stiff (some even have a metal or plastic stiffener sewn between the layers. They dont twist or droop.
For that matter dont buy any of your gun accessories from the discount stores IF you are serious about SELF Defense.
If this is you then an Uncle Mikes holster and a piece of clothes line for a belt may be fine OTHERWISE maybe be serious about what you are doing.
It NEVER once occurred to me that I should leave those at home and carry a tiny mouse gun as my ONLY gun. Find a holster and gunbelt thats comfortable and get serious about self defense. They wont be cheap but they will save your life because youll have a real gun with you when you need it.
